High-fructose corn syrup is a preservative that extends the shelf life of food and is sweeter and cheaper than sugar. For these reasons it has become the sweetener of choice for many manufacturers. It is made by changing the sugar in cornstarch to fructose.

While the jury is still out as to the possible adverse health affects caused by the intake of high-fructose corn syrup in one's diet, the fact remains that the types of foods that harbor high-fructose corn syrup in their list of ingredients are usually void of nutritional value and high in calories. This is reason alone to steer clear of such products!

Here are three tips to reduce or eliminate the use of high-fructose corn syrup in your diet!

Tip #1: Read The Labels: Before you buy a product you must read the nutrition fact label to know for sure what it contains to determine if it's right for you. Quickly scan the nutrition fact label to determine if the product contains high-fructose corn syrup. If it does, put it back on the shelf and make the extra effort to locate an alte

Tip #2: Go Organic: Foods labeled 100% organic can be assumed to be free of high-fructose corn syrup. It never hurts to double check the nutrition facts label just to be sure.

Tip #3: Stick to Whole Foods: Opting for your unprocessed whole fruits and vegetables is always a safe bet! There is nothing like whole foods to ensure your obtaining all natural nutrients.
