Are you happy with your workforce? Are your employees the best and most suitable for your organization that you can imagine? If so, don’t get complacent. It’s important that you take steps to retain your brightest stars and to keep your team working well. Let’s go over some of the strategies you can use to help retain your best employees. 1. Offer Perks and Upgrades People Will Use Daily Consider offering your employees standing desks or standing desk converters. Having the ability to stand while working is becoming increasingly popular in the workplace. This is because standing can help employees feel more energized and can reduce the back strain involved with sitting. It can also improve health, thus possibly boosting productivity. You’ve probably heard the expression, “sitting is the new smoking.” The fact that so many of us spend our work days constantly sitting is having a terrible effect on physical health, putting people at greater risk of a wide variety of health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke. Investing in high-tech office furniture will be welcomed by your employees, and can even help attract top talent. It’s a worthwhile investment. 2. Improve Communication Strong and clear communication is essential to successful employee retention. Don’t underestimate how problems in this area can make people want to find opportunities elsewhere. This is especially the case when managers or supervisors lack the communication skills they need to make lower-level employees decide what is required of them. For example, if supervisors or managers fail to give clear feedback about performance, information about earning potential, and information on expectations there are sure to be problems. It is essential that scheduled meetings be held and that employees know there is a framework within which they have the chance to do well. 3. Revisit your training and systems When employees aren’t doing well, it’s important to investigate whether there’s anything in the work system of your organization that could be setting them up to fail. It’s essential that everyone in your workplace has all the tools they need to succeed and create success for your company. Making sure that people are able to succeed will make them feel encouraged and in turn, those employees will want to stay and do even better for you. Not only that, proactively investing in specialized training, and paying for employees to attend conferences and events relevant to their work will not only show them that you care about the work they do, but it will demonstrate that you want to help them do it even better. 4. Keep Your Senior Managers in the Loop One common reason employees decide to leave a company is because they feel the higher-ups don’t know they exist. Ensure that your senior management knows who all the employees are and is aware of their special skills, abilities, and talents. They should meet with each member of your team on a regular basis. This will help to foster better communication and make everyone feel appreciated. 5. Give Employees the Chance to Express their Opinions Make sure all employees feel free to express their opinions, something that can help to ensure they feel respected. You should actively ask for ideas and make people feel comfortable in sharing them. According to a study of 20,000 employees by the Harvard Business Review (summarized here by Inc.), respecting your employees can be the single largest predictor of how productive, happy, and loyal they will be to your company. Keep Your Best Employees this Year and for Many Years After rnWhile this is not the most comprehensive list of strategies to retain your top talent, I hope that the resources provided in this article give you inspiration to begin offering your best employees the perks and appreciation necessary to earn their loyalty and make sure they stay with your company for the long haul.
