Driving safely means keeping your car properly maintained, and for this there are many parts of your car that you need to be keeping an eye on. Your brake pads might actually be the most important element to keeping your car maintained in a way that ensures safe driving. You simply wouldn't run your care without a fully functioning braking system, this is essential and everyone knows it. It is a fact that a car will stop much faster and more effectively if the brake pads are not worn down, which of course, if you follow simple logic, reduces your chance of an accident, so it is worth checking them before you drive away. Your car should respond accordinly even to a light touch on the brakes. You will be able to tell whether or not they do as they should. Braking systems work by pressing the brake pads against the rotating disk rotors when you hit the brake pedal. This slows the car down and will eventually bring it to a hault. You see similar principles in action when you apply the brakes on a bicyle. When somebody says the brakes need replacing, what they usually mean is that the brake pads need replacing, this is because they take the majority of the friction and heat when the car is braking. Estimates show that your brake pads would usually need replacing after every 30,000 to 35,000 miles. Although, obviously, there will be many factors which determine their life span. Just some of the factors that can determine this are; the nature of your driving, the conditions you drive in, how suddenly you brake and so on. The materials used in the manufacturing of your brake system will also be a large deciding factor in how long they last. It is important that you know what to look for to allow you to assess any brake damage, due to the day to day wear that we put our brakes through. There are ways to determine when your brake pads need replacing, both by eye or by ear. You can see how worn your brake pads are and you need to start thinking about replacing them when they become worn down to less than an quarter of an inch. If you allow the brake pads to wear down to less than one eighth of an inch then you are are serious risk of them damaging your rotor. Thankfully the brake pads are usually easy to locate and look at. In cases where the brake pads are not easy to see you may have to remove your wheel to look at them properly. Brake pads can be located easily, when looking from above you should be able to see the brake pads pressed against the metal rotor. Also, if you hear a screeching sound when you put your foot on the break pedal it means your brakes need work. If you can hear the sound of scraping metal when you apply the brakes then it would seem you have left it too long and damaged your rotor. Of course this is more complex to sort than replacing some brake pads and while it could have easily been avoided once you begin to hear the scraping you really need to take the car in for attention. It is critical you pay attention to your brakes and make sure you maintain them before any real damage is done. This will save you money and will obviously help to keep you safe. After all, changing your brake pads too early is a lot better than changing them too late.
