Is your lawn in really bad shape? You should consider sodding it. Sod is the optimal option than natural grass seeds. It’s because it allows you to have a lush green and healthy lawn within a week or two. Using grass seeds, on the other hand, takes a much longer period and requires a lot more attention. When choosing the right sod, you can choose from the following available options:
  • Bermuda grass
  • Buffalograss
  • Kentucky bluegrass
  • Augustine grass
  • Zoysia grass
  • Centipede grass
  • Fescue grass
With so much variety, you may ask, what would be the kind that fits your specific lawn? You may want to consider the following variables:

Consider Local Climate

An efficient way to determine the right variety of grass is to consider the local climate. If it is mostly cold throughout the year, you might want to get transitional grass such as ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass or tall fescue. For hot and humid climate, on the other hand, you might want to consider Centipede, St. Augustine, Bermuda or Carpetgrass. The reason behind it is because the grass blades tend to turn brown due to summer heat. Nevertheless, the above-mentioned types of sod provide greater resistance for heat and drought and stay in good health during summers.

Don’t Overlook Soil Condition Prior Sodding

Before sodding your garden, never ignore the state of the soil. Examine its pH level and pick your type of turf accordingly. Besides centipede grass, no other kind of turf can withstand acidic soil. You can either go for a grass that can grow well in acidic soil or take actions to decrease acidity.

Consider Sunlight Exposure

Another crucial variable to consider that many people seem to disregard is the daily exposure to sunlight when it comes to landscape. Acknowledging it will help you determine the right kind of sod for your lawn. If your garden doesn’t receive much sunshine, Bermuda grass might not survive for long. It would be a better idea to grow Centipede grass or St. Augustine in your lawn because this type of grass doesn’t require exposure to intense sunlight for growth.

Consider Foot Traffic

How often do your kids and pets play in the lawn area? If it's pretty often, you should consider a sod that doesn’t get ruined due to substantial foot traffic. The types of turf that can withstand stress and bounce back are Zoysia grass and Bermuda grass and thus appropriate for lawns that receive heavy foot traffic. Additionally, if your pet urinates in your lawn, the grass will get ruined due to nitrogen. You should pick a grass type that is resistant to it and can quickly recover from the damages. Ryegrass and fescue grass are the suggested option for you if you have pets.

Consider Watering Requirements

Finally, evaluate beforehand how much time you can spend taking care of your lawn. Some kinds of sod need more care and watering, whereas other types are easier to maintain. Now that you have decided on the type of sod you should install in your lawn, it’s best to contact professional landscapers. They will professionally install sod on your lawn. Besides, you can hire them for the maintenance task so as to keep it in good shape without spending hours working on your lawn.
