If you've never done any decorating at all in your home, you might feel that you don't know how or where to start. But when all is said and done, you want a new look and want to get started. There's very little question about what element to choose last, but there are lots of things you can select first. But just how to start?

1. Start with the bedroom:

It's where you'll be spending almost a third of your time when you're at home, after all. If you're on a tight budget, opt for new bedding first, but don't skimp on thread count! Buy as well as you can afford to spend in this area — it makes a huge difference. If you have a little more money, paint the bedroom walls to complement your new bedding. Still more cash in your pocket?

Add coordinating window treatments. Early risers should opt for a lighter palette of colors and more translucent treatments. Night owls who like to sleep in will probably likely be more satisfied with deeper tones and more substantial coverings that block out the light. If you're really ready to splurge, buy that bed you've always dreamed about. And choose carefully. It should mirror your personality, fit your room comfortably and stay with you for years.

2. Try out new furniture:

Furniture is arguably the most important aspect of decorating; if you’re short on furniture or have been using the same pieces for many years, consider bringing some new furniture into your home. Choose comfortable pieces in colors and styles that match your personality. Don’t be afraid to try something other than what the store model has set up; furniture that truly shows your personality will fit in your space better than boring floor model furniture you pick up because it is on sale.

Don’t be afraid to buy used furniture from thrift stores; it is easy to repaint and reupholster these to match your space. Mix and match furniture rather than using only matching sets; you’ll end up with a more unique look, and probably save some money in the process.

3. Layer Your Lighting:

Lighting could be a whole post in itself, but here's what you should consider when you don't know much about it.

Ambient: Its also called general lighting, and its the overhead lighting meant to evenly illuminate a room.

Task: As its name suggests, task lighting is meant to light a specific task. A lamp in the living room might light a reading area.

Accent: Accent lights are meant to highlight a particular object. You might see them on painting.

Adding different types lighting can give your room dimension. Start with ambient lighting in each room, then consider how you can use task and accent lighting. Real Simple has some specific tips on how to do this in each room.

4. Adorn Your Space:

Transform your space with playful additions like pillows and throw blankets. Smaller decorations like these can easily be moved or swapped out. Draw attention to the floor by layering rugs, or pull attention to the walls with fresh curtains and bold wall art. You can also add Spanish wall tiles in your wall art.
