We who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndrome (CFIDS) all know that doctors and their expensive prescriptions and treatments only help so much. Our sleep deprivation can be countered by Ambien and Xanax, but these are habit forming and in the long run quite harmful. Increasing out salt intake for our orthostatic intolerance can raise our blood pressure to new, unhealthy highs. Taking anti-depressants such as Paxil can also cause dependence and fail to give full relief. You can, however, find great relief from alte ative options. Some are even covered by health insurance now that the syndrome is finally recognized by the medical profession. So what kind of therapies do I recommend? Well, first off, you should enroll in a yoga program. Designed to reduce both physical and mental stress, it is a terrific way to get the pressure off your body and help you get the exercise you need. Want an even more challenging regime? Try Pilates, which will strengthen your core muscle groups and make it easier for your posture to improve -- which will ultimately bring pain relief. If those aren't your thing or they don't provide enough relief, turning to acupuncture or acupressure can help tremendously. Both are based on the ancient Chinese philosophy that our bodies are made up of meridians that restore your energy, or Chi, and put it back in order. This, in turn, puts your body in the perfect state of help. Acupressure, also called shiatsu, is a form of massage manipulation whereas acupuncture involves the use of needles on the meridian points. Unfortunately, you have to have a few sessions before you'll feel relief, but it will come. If you do acupuncture, your practitioner will likely combine your treatment with herbal treatments that complement the therapy. They won't be the best tasting things you've had to take, but they really reinforce the benefits of acupuncture. Another ancient Chinese secret is Tai Chi. It involves slow, controlled motions that take you through a series of movements that are also designed to restore your Chi. This gentle form of exercise is excellent for putting in your time and stretching out those sore muscles. You'll really find relief. If all else fails, try homeopathic treatment. This therapy is designed from herbs, plants and other natural remedies. The theory behind this is that you can improve your immune system through constant use of these products. Personally, I see an herbalist and use my herbs every day; I've noticed a definite decrease in my symptoms and have been able to cut back on my pharmaceutical use. I also try to meditate every day so that I can release the thoughts racing through my mind. Of course, you could spend all your time and money on these therapies, so I recommend trying each one and deciding which works best for you. Here's to healthy relief of your symptoms!
