Shyness isn't the same thing as just being a quiet person. A quiet person only speaks when they know they have something they want to contribute to the situation. People who are shy, however, desperately want to speak, but doesn't due to cripppling anxiety.
Even if you think you'll never overcome shyness, you can show yourself ways on how to stop being shy. The changes won't be instant, to be sure, but your confidence will increase over time.
When you overcome shyness, you won't be hampered by the timidity that prevents you from seizing opportunities and overcoming obstables.
Battle your shyness and win using these strategies:
1. Acknowledge who you are. The first step is to be okay being the person you were born to be. There's no way to fundamentally change yourself. Don't think there's anything wrong with being quiet. Just because you're introverted doesn't mean you're socially stunted, and you can have just as many great qualities as an extrovert.
2. Make yourself known. Social situations tend to be a source of stress for a shy person. That attitude exacerbates the problem. You can allow yourself to fit into a social situation and shine if you work at it. Take small steps and get out of your comfort zone every once in awhile.
3. Don't dodge the situation. Regardless of how bad you feel at times, no matter how nervous, do your best to weather the storm.
If you really feel like you did a bad job, stay the course and review later. Think about what things made you feel that way, and find out if it's possible to correct the problem.
4. Loosen up a bit. Shy people tend to have busy minds. You spend too much time going over whatever you might mess up that you end up refusing to settle down. Just think about the here and now, and don't sabotage yourself by thinking about how you can mess it up. Use breathing exercises to stay calm and prevent panic.
5. Practice makes perfect. Try out whatever social skills you want to test in situations that aren't quite so nerve-wracking, such as family gatherings or with friends you know well. This way, you don't have to worry about messing up the relationship you have with the other person.
6. Visual aids can help. You'll find a lot of comfort in visualizations. Shyness can easily be conquered if you use these exercises to lessen it.
* Imagine a situation that would often make you panic or feel extremely nervous. Just think about how nice it would be if you were happy and confident in that situation.
7. Take the focus off yourself. Don't think about yourself; instead, think about the other person in the conversation. Consider what they have to say. This way, you won't become so focused on what you're doing wrong, and just occupying yourself with what they're doing, thus eliminating shyness.
You can use this technique to allow the other person to dominate the conversation, if that's more comforting. You can really do this using open-ended questions, which will lead them to start a story or give more detailed answers.
When someone is used to feeling afraid of conversation, shyness can occur. However, you can overcome shyness using these new habits and techniques that can break the old behaviors that caused it in the first place!
