The thyroid gland is a very important part of the body. It is responsible for secreting the thyroid hormone which regulates vital body functions such as heart rate, body weight, breathing, muscle strength, and lot more. It is a gland that is located at the base of the neck which works by storing and releasing the hormones that will be distributed throughout the body. Using iodine, it creates two main hormones known as T3 and T4. Two common health conditions related to the thyroid glands are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is the condition when there is too much thyroid hormones in the body. Conversely, hypothyroidism is the condition when the thyroid hormones in the body are not enough. There is an autoimmune disorder called Hashimoto disease that causes abnormality in your thyroid hormone production. The immune system attacks the thyroid gland which leads to hypothyroidism. Most cases of hypothyroidism are caused by Hashimoto disease. Its symptoms are common with other diseases. Because of this, it is quite difficult to diagnose this condition. Some the symptoms include fatigue, puffy face, weight gain, increase sensitivity to cold, muscle ache, joint pain, depression, prolonged bleeding for women, and dry skin among others. If you experience any of these, it would be best to consult a doctor. There is no absolute cure for Hashimoto disease. But there are effective medications and treatments that could lessen its symptoms. It is necessary to treat Hashimoto’s disease because it may lead to other health complications such as goiter, mental health issues, heart problems and myxedema.

Food and Diet

The most important information needed before treating thyroid problems is to know the cause of the problem. Checking the diet of the patient can offer insights to the cause. There are many foods that impede thyroid function. By limiting these foods, you are able to help your thyroid to function better. Gluten is a substance that is linked to thyroid problems. Asking the doctor for a blood test may reveal whether or not the patient has allergic reaction to it. If it is positive, then it is best to remove gluten from your diet. It may be difficult at first by eventually you will get used to it. Heavy metals such as mercury are considered toxins that can cause harm in the body. It can slow down the thyroid’s function. Removing these toxins can significantly improve your overall health. Heavy metal detox is an effective way to get rid of these chemicals.

Reduce Stress

Stress is also often associated with thyroid dysfunction. Studies show that people subjected to stress have higher levels of cortisol and low levels of thyroid hormones. Treatment and medication will be useless if the patient is continually experiencing stress. Active relaxation is highly advised for people who are experiencing stress. Aside from food, taking care of your body physically can also positively impact your health. Regular exercise helps in stimulating the secretion of thyroid hormones. Along with regular exercise, relaxation is also good for your body and mind. It can help flush the toxins in your body which contributes to thyroid dysfunction. If you are overweight, losing weight can be an effective way to improve thyroid function. Weight loss also removes the toxins in your body.

Health Supplements

Sufficient nutrients and minerals are required to strengthen the immune system of the body. Unfortunately, not everyone can complete the daily requirement of all the essential nutrients and minerals. There are a lot of people who suffer from nutrient deficiency. To prevent this, it is highly advised to take health supplements especially for people with thyroid problems. The essential nutrients and minerals should include zinc, iodine, selenium, vitami A, vitami D, and omega-3.

Regular Thyroid Tests

The difficult part about treating thyroid problems is that the process is not straightforward. The thyroid hormones of the patient may fluctuate all throughout the treatment. Regular testing is necessary to monitor the hormone levels to makes it easier to control. Usually, doctors test the TSH and T4 levels of the patient.

Thyroid Hormone Replacement

If the problem is out of hand, the doctor would suggest thyroid hormone replacement treatment. It keeps your hormones within acceptable range. Very low thyroid hormones may lead to other health complications such as heart problems. The most common type of thyroid hormone replacement is the synthetic form of T4. If you are experiencing any symptoms of thyroid dysfunction or Hashimoto disease, it is important to consult a doctor. Proper diagnosis is the first step of treatment. Do not be afraid of having a thyroid disorder. Early detection is still the best way to prevent other health complications. Treating thyroid problems in general is a lifelong process. What works for one patient does not necessarily work for the other. It helps to try various approach and see which one your body responds to the best.
