A lot of fellas wonder whether
pickup lines can really work on girls. Yet when we hear the phrase "pickup line," we tend to envision some sleazy guy wearing a gold chain across his hairy chest. He's prowling a bar or nightclub, his beady eyes scanning the room for his next target.
He approaches a woman...eyes her up and down, like a hungry wolf eyeballing a slab of meat...and delivers a crude pick up line that causes her to roll her eyes (or throw her martini in his face).
I'm referring to pick up lines like these...
"I sure hope you know CPR, because you're taking my breath away."
"Would you mind loaning me a quarter? [What for?] I want to call my mom and tell her I just met the woman of my dreams."
"Hey, can I borrow a map? I keep getting lost in your eyes."
"Are you religious? Cause you are the answers to all my prayers."
"Sorry lady, but you owe me a drink. [Why?] Because when I looked at you, I dropped mine."
"I'm new in town -- could you give me directions to your apartment?"
"If I could rearrange the alphabet, I would put U and I together."
"If I followed you home, would you keep me?"
"Is there an airport nearby or is that just my heart taking off?"
"Was your father an alien? Because there's nothing else like you on Earth!"
Now, not all pick up lines are THAT cheesy. Here are a few that women may actually find charming or flattering -- IF you follow them up correctly (which I'll explain how to do in a moment).
"Wouldn't we look cute on a wedding cake together?"
"Do you know karate? Because your body is really kickin'."
"What does it feel like to be the cutest girl in the room?"
"You must be a hell of a thief, because you stole my heart from across the room."
(Note: Don't use this pick up line on women who are extremely hot and KNOW it. This one is effective on a girl who is attractive, but is clearly NOT the best-looking girl in the place.)
And then, there's another category of pick up lines. I call these...
Pick Up Lines That Could Get You Slapped In The Face
You'll want to be extremely cautious when using the following lines when you
pick up a girl. A woman with a sense of humor might find them amusing, but you also run the risk of getting hit or having a martini tossed in your face. (Especially if her boyfriend the UFC fighter happens to be standing nearby.) Like I said, be careful...
"Do you know what has 142 teeth and holds back the Incredible Hulk? [What?] My zipper."
"Your daddy must play the trumpet, because he sure made me horny!"
"Is that a keg in your pants? Because I'd love to tap that ass."
The Reality About Using Pick Up Lines To Approach Women
So are pick up lines something to be ridiculed? Do successful pickup artists ever use them to approach women and start conversations? I've written several popular books on how to pick up women, and I've taught thousands of guys how to "break the ice" with women and seduce them with effective conversation. I personally feel that if you're learning how to approach women, using pick up lines is NOT the way to go.
I teach a style of approaching women that I refer to as "going under the radar". What this basically means is that you say (or ask) something clever when you approach women -- a comment or question that catches her by surprise and engages her attention, without signalling your sexual interest. These methods of approaching women feel more casual and natural to both you and her.
I like to approach the girl and ask her a clever question, one that females are naturally going to have an opinion about.
Opener #1: "Quick question -- would you allow your boyfriend to go to a bachelor party if you knew there were going to be strippers there? My friend Samantha asked me for my opinion."
Opener #2: "Hey, help me settle a debate I'm having with my friends. How long do you need to be dating someone before you change your status on Facebook from "single" to "in a relationship?" Because my friend Jennifer has been going out with a guy for a month and SHE thinks it's an exclusive thing, but he hasn't changed his "single" status and she's wondering if she should say something..."
These openers are particularly effective because they're based on what I call "relationship grey areas." Men and women tend to have their own ideas about what's allowed in a relationship, and what is unacceptable. Another example: is it "cheating" if a guy hangs out with his ex-girlfriend socially, without telling his current girlfriend?
When you approach a woman, your goal with the opening line is to get a positive response that makes her want to talk to you further. And if you're a confident, playful guy, this one always gets a fun reaction:
"Do I look gay? Because this dude was TOTALLY flirting with me in the men's room a minute ago. Be honest, is it my shirt?" (Or, "is it the way my ass looks in these jeans?")
I wouldn't classify those as pick up lines. But does this mean pick up lines are, by definition, a bad thing?
In the past, I have used some of the pick up lines I gave you above -- and because I was able to transition into a fun conversation, I was able to get the girl into bed that night!
It was because I poked fun at the fact that I had USED a pick up line! After I said it, I followed up with "I know that TOTALLY sounded like a pick up line...but I want to talk to you for a minute and I couldn't think of what else to say. My name's Dean..."
Then from that point, I used my usual methods -- I asked a few "strategic" questions to get her in a fun mindset, and sharing information about herself...I used techniques like "Cold Reads" and "Hypotheticals"...and at all times, I stayed in control of the interaction and guided it down the correct path.
Sometimes a really corny pick up line can be a FUN way to start things off. The trick is knowing how to follow it up with something original that makes her want to talk to you.
Or, you can always use this:
"You're so cute that you totally made me forget my pick up line."
(Women always find that one cute and funny!)
