Almost everyone agrees that organizing, calculating, and reporting your taxes is a long and difficult process. However, because of excellent tax software and online filing, the calculating and reporting is now much easier. That leaves us with the problem of organizing our taxes each year, which is definitely the hardest part of tax season.
So how does one solve this problem of organization? It’s actually rather easy. The key is to get ahead of your finances before tax season. But if you haven’t done that yet, then use the current tax season to help organize your finances for the next tax season. Here are some steps to help you get started.
Keep a Record of All Money Spent During the Year
Although there are many budgeting software programs to do this for you, nothing is more simple and straightforward as just using a spreadsheet. If you don’t have spreadsheet software, you can download some versions for free or use an online version.
Start by tracking all of your expenses. These come in the form of cash transactions (keep the receipts or estimate each week), checks, credit cards, debit cards, and online banking transactions. Take time each week or month to add these transactions to your spreadsheet.
While you’re organizing your spreadsheet, pay special attention to any tax related expenses. Think about all of the deductions and other items you organized for taxes and try to identify them throughout the year. Keep an envelope or folder for receipts. And think about your itemized deduction schedule to help you identify which items you should flag. For example, healthcare costs, property taxes, home improvements, insurance payments, and interest and investment related items may all be of importance to you, depending on your tax status.
Keep Your Finances Organized
As mentioned above, it pays to keep your finances organized. Use a spreadsheet to track your spending and all the movements in your bank and credit accounts. Then, take it a step further by breaking your income and spending out into categories and creating a budget. There are many ways to budget that range from very simple to extremely complex. Find a method that works for you and that you can commit to, then dedicate a few hours a week or month to organize and budget your money.
The best type of budget you can create is a budget that you can stick with each month. Making the tracking and organizing a habit is the only way to keep on top of your finances, so make sure you choose an easy method to keep track of your spending.
Use Your Taxes to Help You Get Organized
Since taxes require you to look back at an entire year of income and spending, use this to your advantage. Look closely at the information that takes the longest to collect and then make that a part of your organization practices going forward. Literally, a few minutes per week or month can save you hours or even days when tax time arrives. Not only will it keep your finances organized, but it can also help improve your spending by identifying spending patterns that you didn’t even know you had.
