Injuries range from first degree burns that affect outer layer of the skin to second or third degree burns that extend into deeper tissues. Third degree and inhalation burns are typically treated at a burn center. For those patients, rehabilitation is used to help patients manage pain and recover from muscle damage, nerve damage or severe scarring. It is essential to apply appropriate first aid to any burn or scald as soon as possible. This will limit the amount of damage to your skin. You may need to apply these first aid techniques to yourself or to another person who has been burnt.First aid advice for burns and scalds is outlined below :
-Stop the burning process as soon as possible. This may mean removing the person from the area, dousing flames with water or smothering flames with a blanket. Do not put yourself at risk of getting burnt as well.
- Remove any clothing or jewellery near the burnt area of skin, but do not attempt to remove anything that is stuck to the burnt skin because this could cause more damage.
-Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm water for 10-30 minutes, ideally within 20 minutes of the injury occurring. Never use ice, iced water or any creams or greasy substances, such as butter.
-Make sure that the person keeps warm, using a blanket or layers of clothing (avoiding the injured area). This is to prevent hypothermia occurring, when a person’s body temperature drops below 35°C (95°F).
-Cover the burn with cling film in a layer over the burn, rather than by wrapping it around a limb. A clean, clear plastic bag can be used for burns on your hand.
Use cold, running water to completely flush chemicals off your body. If the chemical is a powder, such as lime, use a brush to remove it from the skin before flushing with water.Be sure to remove any jewelry or clothing that has been in contact with the chemical. If there continues to be a burning sensation after washing the area with cold water, flush the area for another several minutes with cold, running water.Wrap the burned region with a clean cloth or a dry, sterile gauze bandage. If a chemical comes into contact with your eyes, flush your eyes with water immediately. Do not worry about finding sterile water; the most critical objective is to begin flushing as soon as possible. Flush your eyes with water for at least 20 minutes. After washing, close your eyelids and cover them with loose, moist dressings before seeking medical care with someone's assistance.
A burn, which affects that skin, is its worst nightmare come true. Unless you act fast, a burn can seep into the skin and invade your entire body.Burns are ugly, they hurt, and they are scary.Any burn more serious than a mild second degree burn should be evaluated by a doctor. Knowing how to treat a burn can help prevent infection and scarring to burned skin.It happens, immediately submerge the burn in cold water or apply ice to lower the skin temperature as soon as possible. Then, apply fresh aloe (the sticky juice on the inside is the good stuff) or open a vitami
E capsule and apply the oil. This is another time to bust out the Xclair cream, and apply it three times a day until the wound heals. (If you don’t believe me, oncologists use it on cancer patients who experience radiation burns.)Though not as common as heat burns, chemical burns can happen.
