90% of America today is wonder how the Obesity rate is grow so fast and why! The other 10% know why and are not in the obesity bracket, or even the less fit bracket. In 2009 the only state to have a less that 20% obesity rate was Colorado at 18.6%. So on average more than 1/4 of the population in, what I consider, the greatest country in the world are more than 30lbs overweight. Why is that? I heard many people asking that question or silently thinking it to themselves. How many times have you asked why people are overweight? Now it doesn't matter to me weather it's you that's over weight or if it's your friend, our goal is to fix it period.
So whats the common denominator, or in other words the cause of this problem. The answer is food. Not just any food it's different kinds of food. The 'wise saying' "a calorie is a calorie" is not true sad to say, just as not all cars are created equal. Certain foods create different chemical reactions, just like in chemistry or a recipe. You can't add 1 egg, 1 tsp milk 10lbs chocolate and a gallon of root beer and make a loaf of bread it just doesn't work that way. We need the right ingredients to get the right result. So I know what you're thinking, besides "who is this guy he's crazy!", you're most likely thinking I've done diets where they made me eat very little, this that or the other. This is different. With the right foods amounts are less of a problem. You can feel full and loose weight.
So why did the diets I tried fail? Well Lets Discuss that. Most diets focus on 1 of 3 things. 1- lower calorie intake, 2- eliminating carbs, 3-taking certain drugs.
First off lowering calories is said to burn 'fat'. Lets look at the science behind that. When you consume less than you burn off, tissues are used for energy. Notice I said tissues not fat. When your body has less than it needs, it takes it where it can get it. Many times your muscle is used for it's nutrient content and this causes you to lose weight, both muscle and fat. So for this you lose what you were looking to gain. Also another issue here, what happens when you hit your weight? You eat what your body needs again, and since your staved yourself your body is in starvation mode and begins to store that food as fat! So you took 1 step forward and 2 steps back. We want to stay away from this.
Next we have the infamous carbohydrate elimination technique. Lets dig into this one shall we. What do carbs do for your body anyway? They do multiple things but 2 very important ones are first they supply your body with energy. When you don't eat carbs for periods of time you feel sluggish and very tired. This is not a fun feeling to have. They also stimulate the pleasure center in your brain. Why do you think we eat ice cream and candy when we feel sad? It triggers that and makes us happy. It also can help keep us from being depressed, as long as we use them in moderation (with the sweets anyway). I have a relative who got depressed when doing a certain diet where she didn't eat carbs for 3 weeks or more. So we want to avoid this as well.
Lastly injection of drugs. This one is dangerous and down right stupid. Don't mess with your hormones your body can and will fight back!! So don't do it!
So with all this confusion what does work? Healthy, Nutritious food. But there is a difference is what some people think is healthy and what really is.
