It is said that human blood pH should be slightly alkaline in the range of 7.35 – 7.45. Below or above this range means there is a better chance for disease to occur in the body. A pH of 7.0 is considered to be neutral. When our pH is below 7.0 this means we are acidic and a pH above 7.0 is alkaline on a pH scale.

An acidic pH can occur from many things such as; an unhealthy diet, toxins found in our water/food/air, high stress levels, and anything that deprives our cells of the proper oxygen and nutrients. Our body is continually trying to maintain an alkaline state and uses what we fuel our body to maintain these levels.

You can think of our body like an engine in a car, if you never change the oil or do proper maintenance…eventually it will break down. The same goes for our body if we always fuel our body with acidic foods, drink unhealthy water, live in toxic environments, do not detox or provide our body with exercise…eventually it will break down.

In our North American society, higher levels of acidosis is quite common and is mostly due to our diet, which is often made up of highly acidic foods such as; meats, dairy, fatty oils, liquor, pop, processed foods, fast food and sweets to name some. We consume far to low in the alkalizing foods like fresh vegetables. There is just so much selection out there in our foods. The best is to try and go back to the basics and only eat foods that grow naturally in this world.

An acidic pH balance will:

* decrease the body’s ability to absorb nutrients & minerals * decrease the energy production in cells * decrease it’s ability to repair damaged cells * decrease it’s ability to detoxify toxins * decrease it’s ability to detoxify heavy metals

The problem is we as a society are not educated enough on what is an alkaline food and what is an acidic food. Just by eating a healthy diet we can greatly affect our body’s pH levels. After all no disease can live in an alkaline environment, but can thrive in an acidic environment.

From the words of Dr. Mercola “Vegetables contain phytochemicals, which are powerful natural agents to promote health. They will also help to alkalinize your system, as most of us are far to acidic. Most people benefit more from increased vegetables than from extra vitamins. You will normally need a large amount of vegetables to optimize your body’s pH acid/alkaline balance.

Look for a Free Alkaline/Acid Food Chart. This is something you can print off and take to the grocery store with you or hang on your fridge. Now you will be able to make an educated decision on which are the alkaline foods and which are acidic foods. Most experts recommend a diet of 80% Alkaline and 20% Acidic. If you can maintain this diet, often times you will have much more energy in your body and a better chance at maintaining an alkaline pH balance.
