As you might have discovered already, crunches are not enough to create a flat stomach. You will need to work out your abdominal muscles of course, but if there is fat deposition in this region you will never see the results you want with just abs exercises. Probably you have heard that spot exercising your abs muscles will have the effect of reducing fat around the abdomen, which is a big mistake. The body can not work to lose fat in a particular region, just by exercising only muscles in this region. What shall be done is to focus on losing body fat all over and enhance muscle tissue.
Control your diet
The first step for flattening your stomach is to change your diet. For weight loss you should focus on the following:
1. Eat more often. The consumption of several small meals throughout the day will activate your metabolism and help you burn more calories.
2. Consume fewer calories. Make a light meal, having control over the size of your portion and make sure that you eat less than what you consume. It is easier to eat fewer calories if you eat foods rich in fiber and also make sure that your meals are balanced between carbohydrates (about 50-60%), protein (about 20-30%) and fat (approximately 20-30%).
3. Drink more water. Sometimes when you feel hungry could be alleviated with water intake.
Control your Exercise
Once you reduce the intake of calories, it is time to start exercising. The diet without exercise will lead to a partial loss, but at some point you will reach a steady state without losing more belly fat. The exercise will help you overcome this steady state maintaining your muscle mass. Your program should include:
a) 3-5 times a week cardio (aerobic exercise) for 30 to 45 minutes in the area of heart frequency. Any other form of exercise (eg aerobics), will do your exercise more fun.
b) Training with weights which target all muscle groups, 2-3 non-consecutive days a week, including abdominal program (do not work out your abs every day)
c) Flexibility and relaxation exercising
d) Do always a warm-up before exercise and recovery after the exercise. Drink water in between.
