Your wedding should be filled with happiness, joy and excitement. However for many couples it can be stressful and overwhelming.
Stress manifests itself in many ways and these are merely some of the symptoms; stomach problems, and lack of concentration, moodiness, insomnia, poor skin, fatigue and illness. These symptoms can turn you in to the ultimate bridezilla. Here are some ideas which can help minimize the stress of planning a wedding.
1. Exercise - Getting in shape is a great way to reduce stress. Not only does exercise release endorphins that make us happier, also looking in shape for your wedding day is going to make you feel better. Going for walks is a nice and relaxing way to get in shape and lose weight. You may want something a little more high impact and there are many wedding boot camps that can assist in getting in shape. Joining a gym or a personal trainer is another option.
2. Eat healthier - Studies have shown that certain foods can actually increase stress and reduce energy levels. Caffeine is one example of a food that can make you jumpy, causes sleep deprivation, nervousness, can cause dehydration and make you more high strung. Try replacing caffeine with water. Another food to avoid is salt, as it not only causes fluid retention but also bloating and discomfort.
3. Be flexible and reasonable - Don't expect your wedding to be perfect as having unreasonable expectations can be an unnecessary stressor. Remember that you cannot control all aspects of the day. Don't sweat the small stuff. Make sure your on top of the wedding planning and that you confirm and follow up with all suppliers diligently. This will avoid unexpected problems.
4. Time Management - Make sure that you have enough time to get everything done. Not enough time or leaving things to the last minute are a cause of unnecessary stress. Planning earlier will help avoid chaos of last minute scrambles. Utilise the tools and resources available which outline time lines for booking and confirming each aspect of the wedding.
5. Have a distraction - Ensure that you continue to connect with friends and do not let the wedding planning consume you. Make some time every week to spend doing what you want that does not include wedding planning.
6. Manage your relationships - sometimes family and friends make suggestions and want to be involved in the decision making process. Learn to say 'no' and avoid being a people pleaser. Although friends and family have good intentions, you need to remember that this is your day.
7. Keep to your Budget - Avoid spending on unnecessary and costly items. Do your research, as you can often get similar if not the same products for less than the first quote. Money can be the source of much stress between couples and you probably don't want to start your life together in debt.
8. Keep a diary or to do list - The most obvious way to handle stress is to stay organized and write everything down. Make sure you go over your lists to ensure that you don't miss anything.
9. Have a rehearsal - By going through everything at least once will enable you to fine tune the night and eliminate any potential problems.
10. Enjoy the Day! - Just make a decision that once your wedding day comes around that you will let the day take its course. If you've planned everything well you should not encounter any surprises or problems. Surrender yourself to the fact that the day will be great for both you and your guests as long as the bride and groom are having a good time.
