If you have trouble remembering people's names, you can find yourself in some pretty embarrassing situations, but when you remember someone's name, you show that you regard the person as both important and memorable.
There is really no one way that works for everyone in remembering people's names, so you may need to experiment with these different methods to find what works best for you.
The first step is to pay very close attention when you meet someone for the first time. When you are introduced to someone, repeat their name as you meet them. For example: "Hello Tom. It's nice to meet you."
After you say the name out loud, repeat it silently to yourself several times. Before you part ways, if you have forgotten their name, ask again right away.
It can also help to introduce the new person right away to someone else. This will give you another opportunity to use the name in the same social situation.
After the initial meeting, take extra steps to embed the name in your memory. Here's one technique that works really well for me: write down the name a few times while picturing the person in your mind's eye. This technique works best for those of us who tend to think and understand concepts visually. You'll be able to picture the word in connection with the person. This can also be especially helpful if someone has a name with an unusual spelling. The combination of their unique spelling with writing down the name can really help etch it into your brain.
If you can't write it down, or you still need help remembering, try using a mnemonic device that links the person's name with an object that sounds like their name. For example, if you are meeting someone named Mike, picture his face in your mind and think "bike" or imagine Mike holding a "mike" (a microphone) or a box of Mike '
Ike candies. Similarly, imagine Matt standing on a welcome mat.
Connecting the name with an object that you are already familiar with is really effective. You might also imagine their face on the object. Alte
atively, you can attach the person's name with what they do, whether it's their job or a hobby they love. For example, Ted the Ed for an educator or Kyle the Smile for a dentist. Of course, their name may not always rhyme with what they love doing.
You can also use pieces of songs or famous quotes to make a person's name memorable. If your new acquaintance is named Jesse, associate his name with the song "Jessie's Girl." Or, when you meet someone named Frank, repeat "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" (because the quote is by Franklin D. Roosevelt).
The more humorous and memorable you can make your mnemonic device, the easier time you'll have remembering people's names.
