When I first visited Hurghada in the late 90’s it was a small town, not really large enough to be called a city. Now it’s a bustling city and a hotspot on the Red Sea.
Its coastal location and year round warm weather has made it an ideal place for holiday goers looking for a resort vacation, diving and water sports.
The area is renowned for its beautiful coral reefs, turquoise blue ocean, wide array of colored fish, diving and snorkelling.
The city has grown into a full size city with wonderful resorts and first class Hotels.
The nightlife is thriving with nightclubs, bars and discos. Seafood restaurants abound, and there is a wonderful boardwalk along the ocean where you can sit at one of the many outside cafes and enjoy a meal or a coffee while viewing the ocean.
Many of the Hotels have their own beaches where you can snorkel or just relax on the beach, or have a game of volleyball or tennis overlooking the water.
This part of Egypt is somewhat westernized compared to Cairo, Luxor and Aswan and dress codes are a little more relaxed.
Take a daytrip out on a boat to swim, snorkel or dive off the reefs, or just enjoy the view from the boat. The water is so clear you can see the multi colored fish swimming around even from the decks of the boat. A fresh fish meal is cooked and served aboard before returning around 4pm to get ready for dinner and some nightlife.
There are also live aboard boats that can be rented for a few days or a week for diving, and a variety of other watersports. You can windsail, pedal boat and other numerous water sports.
Another option is to take an afte
oon, evening safari in a 4x4 out into the desert to a Bedouin Camp. The trip itself is an adventure up and over numerous sand dunes, like a roller coaster. Witness how real Bedouins live, where they find their water. Ride a camel and enjoy a genuine Bedouin dinner and entertainment. On the way home a stop to see the stars in a pitch black desert, is something you will remember.
The Alfa Wa Leila Folklore show is a favourite with all. A show spectacle, laser lights, a story line, and Arabian horses. Afterwards the kids can ride a horse or camel. The show is followed with another with local music, bellydancers, and a whirling dervish (a twirling man with colored skirts). A fun evening for everyone.
Half an hour down the road is Mars Salam a city of wonderful villas and luxury yachts recently developed and predominantly European owned. A nice place for coffee or a meal.
Hurghada has wonderful seafood restaurants, and a great selection of souvenir stores for those must have Egyptian souvenirs.
Luxor can be visited as a daytrip, but to visit Cairo you would need to ove
ight. Hurghada has become a popular destination from many of the European countries with direct charter flights. Many of the regular Egyptian itineraries include a couple of days in Hurghada after visiting Luxor and Aswan as a relaxing spot after several hectic days of sightseeing.
