Different companies have different strategies in marketing.
In the past, many companies hired salesman for marketing purposes. The salesman may hold a card with company name and company business scope, which would be shown to the potential buyers; at the same time, the salesman will explain the company business features and product features in detail in order to persuade the customers to buy the products or services.

The salesman will try every means to spread the company and product information for marketing. They may find someone with the same interest and send emails to their email box or discuss the issues with them on line through good topic related to the business.
Nowadays, communication tools became more and more. They could use QQ, msn, blog, etc. They may write good articles to ask the potential customers to read, or just post the good articles on some large portals, which could attract a lot of readers.
