You may find yourself making revving noises in front of a fan, imagining the feel of a hot and grumbling exhaust pipe next to your leg. You may have been wearing a leather jacket around the house, even on hot summer days. Inexplicable behavior to some, but to those in the know, these are signs that you're saving up to buy your first 2000cc motorcycle. You need to do your research before selecting the ideal motorcycle, be it a Honda, Harley or Suzuki. You'll need to learn to ride your new bike, and, in many states, you'll need a license to ride a motorcycle. So you'll be going through Drivers Ed once more, learning how to brake, make arm signals and evade a wipeout. You're not quite in the realm of being a Hell's Angel just because you're good at the simulations in the arcade. To even qualify as a beginner, you will need to build up some real-world experience on a closed driving circuit. This isn't a problem though as many local community centers and colleges offer motorcycle lessons. These courses can be a few days or a few weeks in length. Those that take the longer courses are generally better riders before they hit the road for real. Consider yourself a fast learner? Then check out courses offered by bike manufacturers. All the big names most likely have their own training courses designed to teach riders as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. Their thinking: Well-prepared riders equal paying customers. Don't let them pressure you, though. If you've taken their course, but feel like you could use another lesson or two, don't sign off on your hog just yet. Those college courses sometimes provide their own bikes so you don't have to screw up your brand-new baby. An important investment before you step on your motorcycle is your equipment. Items such as gloves, boots, clothing and helmets are not just accessories. These will help protect you if you're unlucky enough to have an accident. Not having the proper attire can lead to you having a very bad case of road rash (best case scenario) or being fed through a tube in your stomach (one of the worst case scenarios). And while some states don't absolutely require you to wear a helmet, it's a wise decision to wear one anyway. The argument that helmets look dumb is really rather an immature one and modern helmets come in a huge variety of cool styles and colors. It's best to get equipped before you set out. If you're getting ready to join the roadster club you'll also need to accept the risks that go with biking. It's a fact that life expectancy for motorcycle riders drops considerably. Unfortunately, many automobile drivers are not paying an awful lot of attention to the road in front of them. Consider yourself rather a moving target while on the road. It's also the case that injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident tend towards the life-threatening kind. Talk over your decision to bike with your loved ones, and make sure your will and life insurance are up to date. That being said, motorcycles can be fun and cheap modes of transportation. 65 miles to the gallon seems rather incredible, right? But it is possible on the back of your motorcycle. Most bikes are extremely fuel-efficient. One main reason is that the engine is carrying less weight than a car's. Also, you're driving around with just you most of the time. Whether your motorcycle is fuel-efficient also depends on the type of bike you choose. Pause for a brief second before rushing out to get that 2000+ CC monster of a bike. You need to make sure that you can cope with the heat and speed of your motorcycle, whether it's a speed bike or built for cruising. You need confidence when it comes to twisting that throttle. Visit a range of local dealers to get a feel for the right kind of bike for you. It may be wise to start out with a small engine bike initially to get some experience in riding. If you've done the training, got your equipment, convinced your loved ones and selected your motorcycle, then all that's left to do is turn the key, step on the clutch and get on the road.
