The state of Illinois boasts a diverse system of 9 public universities at 12 campuses, 48 community colleges, 97 independent not-for-profit colleges and universities, and 35 independent for-profit institutions. The Illinois Community College Board reports that Illinois has the third largest community college system in the nation.
