You have selected your degree program and also get accepted at the university you applied to. You may think that all the hard work is done and it is smooth sailing from now on. But you’re your horses … you are not quite there yet! After you get accepted for a study abroad program, there are still a few details that you must take care of before you leave for that memorable experience. You must make sure that your passport is renewed, apply for a student’s visa to the country you are going to travel, book your flight and if possible arrange for accommodation even before you reach the new land. Besides your traveling arrangement you will also want to look at your medical insurance. Most people will neglect to get proper medical insurance during their stay in a foreign land. However, health insurance gains even more importance when you are travelling alone as a student to a new country. When you are home, there are family and friends who will take care of you. But in a foreign land, no one can come to your aid when you fall ill or have an injury. Without ample medical cover, things may run out of hand if an unfortunate accident befalls you. Some people think they do not need extra medical insurance since they already pay for an insurance policy back home. These people are hugely mistaken because most medical insurance policies are only valid in your home country. International insurance costs more and is hence excluded from the traditional medical insurance plans. So when you are planning to travel abroad for your degree program, you must ensure that you have health insurance cover that is valid internationally. Health insurance is not only a recommendation but a requirement at most universities accepting international students. So your admission procedure will be incomplete until you show that you have health insurance in the country where you will study for the next few months. The universities may also have some other specific requirements related to your medical insurance. So before you purchase a health insurance plan for your study abroad program, make sure that you are meeting all the guidelines set out by the university. International student insurance will take care of all your medical problems while you are studying abroad. Sometimes students fall ill by eating the local cuisines simply because their digestive systems are not used to the type of food offered in the new country. A health insurance will guarantee that you get quality health care and the best medical facilities even in this new land. You will be treated at a reputed hospital where experienced medical professionals treat you back to health. If you travel to the foreign university without a backup medical insurance plan, you may have to bear high costs of prescription medications and doctor’s fee. So before you embark on this life-changing journey, make sure that your medical insurance is in order. This way you do not have to deal with this unwelcome financial burden in the case of some unfortunate accident or medical emergency.
