Proper oral hygiene is beneficial in many ways. It can help you have a healthy smile, prevent gum disease and dental carries, and keep your breath minty and fresh. Many people believe that these are the only benefits of proper oral hygiene. However, there are several other benefits of proper oral hygiene including: Promotes better nutrition Healthy teeth can promote better nutrition as the teeth play a very important role in the digestive process. Why? Because this is where the digestive process starts as teeth are responsible for chewing food. This is why it is good to ensure that your teeth are always strong and healthy by practicing good oral hygiene. Otherwise, you could lose your teeth, suffer from cavities or have inflamed or infected gums all of which have a negative impact on the way you chew food. This is because of the fact that painful teeth make it hard for you to eat healthy foods which are important to your health. Makes your body healthy Science has proven that there is a link between proper oral hygiene and body health. rnFor instance, it has been found that:
  • Those with poor oral hygiene have a high risk of developing heart disease.
  • Women with gum disease show an increased risk of pre-term, low birth weight babies.
  • Chewing problems can cause irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal failure, and other digestive disorders.
How to maintain good oral hygiene Proper oral hygiene involves keeping the teeth, mouth, and gums healthy. To achieve this, you have to brush your teeth more than once a day. Your daily oral care should involve the following:
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Brushing your teeth thoroughly at least two times a day
  • Using a mouthwash to kill germs. However, this is not a necessity
However, remember that looking after your teeth is not enough. You also have to visit a dentist as dentists look after teeth and bone structure holistically. Dentists can easily identify problem areas meaning that they can treat any dental problems before they become worse.rnAfter speaking with some Ohio dentists, we learnt that the industry as a whole is trying to help people get the most out of dental care by educating and free advice on all aspects of dentistry. In addition, a dentist can also help you improve your oral care techniques. It is a good idea to schedule your routine visits to a dentist every 6 months. You should also visit a dentist whenever you notice any discomfort, pain or if you notice any mouth injuries.
