Even if you clean your grout by hand religiously, there will still be some dirt and stains that you cannot address with elbow grease. That is why you should plan on renting a grout cleaning machine about once a year or once every two years depending on how much use the tile in question gets. If you do not want to rent the machine and do the work yourself, you can always hire a grout cleaning service instead. Professional grout cleaners will use heavy duty equipment and powerful grout cleaning agents that you might not have access to. Finally, it is important to use grout sealer. There are two types of grout sealer to choose between which include penetrating grout sealer and topical grout sealer. Topical sealer or topical grout sealants are the best choice for tile areas that are not exposed to a lot of moisture. Wet environments like showers and bathtubs require a penetrating grout sealant that chemically bonds with the grout to fill in the porous holes. The idea behind both kinds of grout sealers is that dirt and stains cannot get into your grout lines if they are protected. However, sealers wear off so make sure you still stick with your cleaning schedule.
