It generally goes away once the baby is born; but if you've had gestational diabetes, there are chances of a recurrence of diabetes at a later stage. The Gestational Diabetes Diet Eating the right amounts of carbohydrates, fat and protein will help you go through the phase of pregnancy smoothly. Especially when you are pregnant, you already are taking care of your diet, but a gestational diabetes problem will call for a special gestational diabetes diet to combat. rnThe commonest method of combating the high levels of glucose is carbohydrate counting. This would mean keeping a track of the carbs that you consume each day. If you eat the same amount of carbohydrates each day, at the same time; it can help you keep the blood sugar levels under control. The General Guidelines of A Gestational Diabetes Diet The American Diabetes Association recommends that you stick to around three small to moderate meals and around 3 or 4 snacks each day. The meal plan that you go onto might include less than the carbohydrate quota that you're used to consuming normally, the complex carbs present in your food should make up for the need of calories. If you consistently stick to meal plans, it will help you to control your blood sugar levels. Ensure that you don't skip meals. Maintain consistency in the amounts that you eat in every meal; and make sure that you stick to a schedule; that would mean that you eat your food at the same times each day. The glucose levels in your body are the worst affected in the morning. So skipping your breakfast is the last thing you should be doing. Limit the intake of breads, fruit, milk and cereal; since they are high on carbs. Increase the amount of protein intake; and avoid fresh fruits and fruit juices altogether (in the mornings). Ensure that high-fiber foods are included in your diet plan. Fresh vegetables and fruits, dried peas, beans, legumes, whole grain breads are good for you. These take longer to break down and get absorbed into your system, as opposed to simple carbs. This will help lower your blood sugar levels and keep them from escalating right after meals. Limit or avoid beverages and foods that contain what are called simple sugars – fruit juices with high sugar content, sodas, flavored teas, desserts. These items help elevate your blood sugar levels; and they might shoot up suddenly. If you have a sweet tooth that just can't be fixed, then consult your health practitioner and consume foods with artificial sweeteners. Milk may not be a good option to hold onto either. It is high in lactose, which is a simple sugar. If you're used to drinking around 2 to 3 glasses per day, you will have to give up on the practice. Find an alternative source of calcium. You could experiment with an unsweetened and decaffed ice tea; or you could try a club soda with a lemon or orange squeeze.
