American humorist Henry Wheeler Shaw said that health is like money, that we don’t know its value till we lose it. Perhaps it’s this piece of wisdom that prompted the formation of Medicare in 1965. Medicare became a cornerstone of US health plan because it covered the health needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities. Because Medicare is publicly funded, the system itself has limits. Its hospitalization benefits are subject to the number of days covered by its basic policy. Beyond this, a patient must pay for his or her hospitalization needs. The same also goes for doctor or nurse costs; if a person exceeds the limits, he or she then pays off what’s not covered by Medicare. To combat this scenario, government allowed different companies to offer plans that may help future or current Medicare holders. These plans cover further hospital and medical professional costs, and they may also pay for prescription medicine. In getting such a plan, a Medicare holder must consider the following. Health needs Medicare supplement comparisons at times depend on the coverage needed. Some coverage may sound appealing on paper but you may have to analyze your needs carefully before you sign for that coverage. You can’t simply get a plan that will supplement you with more medicine without checking your needs. If you’ll need more hospitalizations in the future, for example, your coverage should include more benefits for extended hospital stays because this is critical. Payment Payment will be important in making Medicare supplement comparisons Some companies may allow open payment systems wherein you may enjoy the benefits of the plan now while still paying for the premium. Other companies may demand an outright payment on premiums for you to enjoy the plan. Whichever payment option you choose, make sure you will be capable of paying for it. Company Part of doing due diligence on Medicare supplement comparisons is determining company reputation. The company may be offering the best Medicare plan on paper but this is useless if the company can’t provide you care when the need arises. It’s best to check with your local trade board or a consumer trade group to determine which companies have good reputation in providing Medicare supplements.
