The year 2011 was truly an exceptional year. There were lots of events that took place from high-profile celebrity meltdown to the end of the war in Iraq, from Anthony Weiner being embarrassed by his wiener to uproar of citizens in countries across the world including the US. We can say the year 2011 was truly one we won't be forgetting anytime soon. Thinking back about the year, I believe it really showed us some pointers to learn from. Here are 3 of the most important things we should note from 2011 (1) The power of standing together [ The Arab Spring ] Most people do not really realize the power of standing together for a common cause. That explains why the world was amazed when protest from Tunisia spread like a wide fire to other Arab countries, like Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen and many more. For decades the Arab community have been democratically oppressed and ruled by ruthless dictators like Kaddafi, Hosni Mubarak, however, when the Arab people decided to stand together for a common cause even without having the money and weapons of war to fight the government they were able to topple these ruthless leaders by demonstrating to the world that the people make the country not the government and if the people could come together and agree on a common cause no government can stop them. That was an amazing reality check to the world, nowadays we have been often lead to think governments have all the Vito power and can do whatever they choose, however, we tend to forget that we as a people are the ones who appointed and installed the government and a government can never be more powerful than her people. In essence the year 2011 taught us that the voice of the common man can still be heard and expressed in today's society. And whenever, we feel oppressed by a government that appears too powerful, we can stand together as a people and let our voice be heard. (2) The Curse of the World Wide Web [The Weiner Files] The year 2011 showed us the destructive side of our beloved "World Wide Web" when young and promising congressman and Mayor of New York hopeful Anthony Weiner was forced to kiss his political career good bye following his resignation from Congress on June 21, 2011 from a social media sex scandal particular Twitter. Before, then folks have always never taken the consequences of posting private affairs online seriously. The world is a rapidly evolving place, and 2011 showed us that posting drunken picture, wild parties' pictures online and sending them to friends is probably not a good idea. With modern employers now goggling hopeful prospect candidate before making job offers and cops making arrest just from pictures posted online, we need to become a little bit concerned about the kind of information we share on the web. I believe if Anthony Wiener knew just a tiwpic (a picture posted on Twitter) would cost him his political career and his dream of becoming the Mayor of New York in 2013, he would have reconsidered sending that picture. So while the world wide web makes connections and communications better and faster, the year 2011 showed us that it can be a destructive tool too especially when the wrong kind of information goes out. (3) Justice Always Prevails [ The Twin Tower Anniversary & Death of Bin Laden ] "No peace for the wicked" so the old saying goes. It is no news that after almost a decade in the Middle East and searches for Osama was still futile, the US government and her people were almost giving up hope of finding the man responsible for the mass homicide of thousands of US citizens and civilians around the world. It seemed like justice was never going to be served and families of those deceased still lived in pain knowing the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was still on the loose somewhere. However, the year 2011 showed us that no matter how long it takes, Justice would always be served. Bin Laden believed he could run away from justice but she found him in a private residential compound in Abbottabad and there he was administered first-hand justice by US Navel Seals. It truly was a remarkable year, we witness the end of a decade of war as we watch our troops return home, we remembered those we lost on 9/11, we sympathize with those who were deceased, we grew as individuals and we grew as a people. After putting the year in review I believe 2011 would go down in history as a truly spectacular year we learnt a lot about ourselves, fate and the world we live in. this January in display in our office is a 19inch digital photo frame with amazing slide shows of pictures of remarkable events that took place last year... especially the photo of the kissing couple in the Vancouver riots
