Second only to home renovations in terms of project popularity is DIY painting and decorating. There’s no doubting that, like any trade, if you want a professional job carried out then it is best to call in, well, the professionals. However, many men and women nation-wide and visiting their local paint store, picking out a colour scheme and opting to swing a brush or two on their own. If you’re one of those DIY gurus and have lent some thought to sprucing up one – or several – of your rooms at home then there are a few, important tips that you should keep in mind first. The following hints may come across as common sense to some although, without them, you’ll finding your painting experience to be a lot more troublesome than it needs to be.

Tips for DIY Painters

First and foremost; buy drop sheets. It is easy to get caught up in selecting colours, brushes and rollers whilst forgetting some of these equally-as-vital pieces of equipment. There is a reason that even the pros use these sheets and if you've ever chosen to hire a painter and decorator then you will have realised that even the professionals take care. Make sure that all of your carpet and furniture is securely covered. Murphy’s Law always comes into play when painting a room and you can bet that the one area of the room you neglect to cover will be the one that gets splashes of paint across it. Be prepared and ensure the room is entirely covered with drop sheets. Secondly, you should never neglect the importance of ventilation. The vast majority of paints which are available for purchase are very safe to use, however, some of the stronger, enamel-based paints can pack quite a punch in terms of fumes and, unless used in an open, well aerated area, can be hazardous. Just to be on the safe side, whenever you use paints inside just be sure to leave a few windows or a door or two open to let the fresh air in. Also, don’t forget to take regular breaks, heading outside to clear your head. Do it yourself painting and decorating is certainly a tough gig, however, if you follow the few tips listed above then you’ll at least start out on the right foot and, most importantly, keep yourself and your belongings safe throughout the duration of your project.
