To have a healthy lifestyle appears to be an obsession nowadays, as more and more people are looking to improve the lifestyle they live for a better future. I was always that person who chose to wait until the New Year’s to decide this year was a different me, but then went back to my old habits about 2 months in of going to the gym. Understand that changing your lifestyle is for the benefit of yourself, because you’ve realised that the one you’re living at the moment probably isn’t the healthiest. I’ve found that eating well and exercising consistently is great for general wellbeing, improving my health and I how I feel. There’s some tips that I think are worth sharing in case you wish to do the same.

Hydration

Water was something that I rarely drank. Whenever I felt thirsty I always felt that a good fizzy drink with a bit flavour would help to clench my thirst. However, all of them fizzy drinks can lead to many health problems including diabetes, heart issues and even allow you to put on weight. Having plenty of water basically does the opposite, improving brain function, better hydration and keeps skin healthy. It’s recommended to have around 2 litres of water a day.

Diet

Although I didn’t feel that I had an outrageously bad diet, there’s always improvements you can make to changing it to a good diet. I’ve started to eat more fruit and vegetables, being less careless with what I eat when out on work lunch for example. With the nutrients and vitamins contained in fruit and veg, it can help to fight off disease and increase your immune system which can prevent common illnesses.

Exercise

Exercising is probably one of the more obvious improvements that can be made in your lifestyle. Physical activity in your routine is proven to increase overall health if done regularly. I find myself doing it 3-4 times a week at the gym and see it more as a hobby rather than a chore. Make sure whatever workouts or activities you do, they’re fun!

Sleep

A lack of sleep is just as detrimental to your overall health as having a bad diet or not enough physical activity. The body needs to be allowed to rejuvenate during the night and recover from the stress you’ve been through during the day. A lack of sleep has been known to cause higher stress levels due to a poor mood, increase obesity and affect motor skills. I used to be that person staying up late watching Netflix because I was so engrossed in the latest tv series, but noticed it really affected my moods in the morning when I had to go to work. Having the willpower to turn it off to make sure I got a good 8 hours sleep made me far more relaxed, and in turn, changed my overall persona throughout the day. These are all just little adjustments you can make for improving health. The best thing is that the majority of them are really cost-effective, so it’s just a matter of putting them into practice and incorporating it into your daily routine. It’ll seem like a struggle at the beginning, but once done regularly, you should find it has plenty of benefits.
