There are many reasons for which people want to improve themselves. It is in our nature as humans to strive for more, improve and gather knowledge, so if you are constantly seeking self-growth, you are as normal as each of us. No matter how good we are, we can always be even better, but only if we constantly do things that help us improve.

Be it because you want to learn new things, become a more productive person, get rid of bad habits, or find balance in life, it’s never too late to start working on yourself and become better. Still, you need to remember one thing: self-growth takes time and requires you to actively participate in the process, so you need all the commitment you can get.

Don’t punish yourself if you happen to slack or don’t see the progress you expected. It’s never easy to break patterns and rewire our brains to perceive things a different way. It takes courage, determination, and a strong need to get out of your comfort zone despite the emotional aversion you may be feeling.

The key to personal development is to not do everything at once. You can’t, out of a sudden, be more organized, smarter, healthier, and productive. It takes time, and you need to master these skills one at a time. It is a process that focuses on the long haul and, as we mentioned, never stops.

Accept and reward yourself

This is the most important piece of advice you will ever get when it comes to self-development. For some, this part may be the most difficult one, so it is important that you start with it.

It is natural to want to become better, but you don’t need to punish yourself for who you are now. The way you are now is only the sum of your experiences, so no matter how much you want to be like that or the other person, this is not going to happen. Instead of trying to achieve impossible standards, take a pause and look inside yourself. Yes, you make mistakes, you may not be proud of everything you have achieved so far, but you are who you are and, if you want to become better and keep yourself motivated, you need to stop punishing yourself for the thing you do bad and reward yourself for what you do good instead.

Met that one impossible deadline? Praise yourself for this achievement. It can be through positive affirmations, or you can even go ahead and give yourself a tangible reward. It may be a coffee, your favourite meal, or a piece of unique gemstone jewellery to make you feel special – you earned it, so don’t feel guilty! Positive affirmations also help, so instead of repeatedly telling yourself what you did wrong, focus on reminding yourself of what you did best.

Get physically active

Living a sedentary life can take a toll on your mental health and self-perception. We all like comfort, but comfort does not necessarily stimulate our brains or make us feel like we earned something. It just makes the time pass in a non-productive way.

Working out, jogging, or simply going for a walk from time to time can help give yourself a sense of achievement, even if it’s something as mundane as a walk in the park. The simple fact that you got out of the house and actively did something will feel extremely rewarding, plus walking, or any physical activity releases endorphins, which boost the mood. The fact that you are also burning calories in the process is just an added bonus.

Pick one time of the week and, no matter what, make it your walking time. It may be after your Saturday morning coffee or on Sunday evening to prepare for a new week – all that matters is that you develop this routine.

Make a change in your diet

What and how we eat matters more than you can ever imagine. Without the proper nutrients, our bodies and brains can’t function at their full capacity, which may be the reason why you are feeling less productive, always tired, forgetful, and not in the mood to do anything. The carbohydrates and refined sugars we eat every day are the ones responsible for all these issues, so it may be time to reduce how much of them you consume.

This does not mean you need to change your diet entirely if you don’t feel the need to. Instead, focus on small changes that won’t feel like a punishment. Instead of eating a full bag of chips, replace it with 2-3 tomato and basil bruschetta, or instead of eating that entire bag of gummy bears, switch to a handful of mixed nuts.

Develop a morning routine

If you give yourself at least 7 hours of sleep every night, your mornings should be the times you are feeling most focused and productive, which means it is the perfect time to start building routines. If your mornings are rushed at best and completely chaotic at worst, it’s time for a change in your morning routine.

Focus on creating small habits that will add to a better, more productive morning, such as making your bed, taking a shower, eating a full breakfast, and getting yourself ready for the coming day. If you have the time, you can also include a short workout routine every morning to get those endorphins pumping.

Seeing you are able to perform these tasks every day will give you a sense of reward and help you get started on the right foot every day and will help you understand that breaking bad habits and replacing them with better ones is not as difficult as you imagined. Sure, there will be occasional instances in which you won’t be able to do it all, but don’t punish yourself – it happens to the best of us!
