Melbourne hosted the annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research dedicated to cardiovascular diseases and cardiac surgery. N.V. Vorobyov, a Russian medical specialist, spoke about an innovative technique, IMR-therapy.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) annual meeting was held in Melbourne, Australia, in 2018. 3,000 specialists from 52 countries gathered there to share their knowledge, learn new technologies, and establish collaboration.

Each ISSCR meeting is known for high-quality presentations and collective discussion of topical issues. And the previous year was no exception.

Community President Dr. Hans Clevers introduced speakers who have made a huge contribution to the development of cell therapy: from basic research to application in clinical practice.

The most important meetings were held in the exhibition and meeting halls. During these days, more than 150 reports and 1400 posters were presented. Among them were presentations on the most recent technological and commercial developments and advances.

One of the presentations on the results of clinical studies of cell therapy included data from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research that had been received just a day before the presentation.

The subjects of the reports had two main directions: studies of individual cells and the use of cell therapy in general practice.

IMR therapy

Our compatriot, Dr. Nikolai Vasilyevich Vorobyov, was also present at the conference. He participated in the discussion of reports and spoke about the innovative method of preparing the body for cell therapy. This method is called IMR-therapy. This technique has already proven its effectiveness, which was highly appreciated by the whole scientific community.

Awards

The Innovation Award from ISSCR was given to Frederic Lanner (for his presentation on embryo analysis and the use of pluripotent stem cells in cell therapy) and to Michele de Luca and Graziella Pellegrini for their work in the same field.

Among other ISSCR Award winners were Dr. Susan Lim and young researcher Shuibing Chen. More than 100 graduate students received the Zhongmei Chen Yong Travel Awards ISSCR for their contribution to science and 33 interns won the Merit Award from ISSCR.

The Best Posters Presentation Award was given to Yishai Avior of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tarja Ivanka de Soiza of J. David Gladstone Institutes and the University of California, and Jeffrey Davis from the Institute of Harvard Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology.

Meeting with experts
