Most of us spend at least 40 hours a week at our place of work. That’s at least half of the average American’s waking hours each weekday. Why not make your time at work pleasant? Sure you have lots of work to do but studies have shown that if you are happy while you work you will be more successful. Recent research is starting to indicate that happiness is "causal and brings many more benefits than just feeling good." (http://www.the-happy-manager.com/happy-person.html) We have a lot on our plates though and it’s tough to make it through a grueling day of work and remain smiling. Let’s take a look at some ways to remain happy throughout the workday.
Look at the Big Picture
People place pictures of the family on their desk for a reason. It reminds them of what they are working so hard for. If you don’t have any pictures on your desk what are you waiting for? Go print some of your favorite photos, frame them, and put them on your desk! It will go a long way to reminding you of the great things in life.
Take Breaks
Some people go outside for a smoke. Others take a minute to catch up on what coworkers did over the weekend. Most everyone takes a minute or two throughout the work day to read a web article or check their personal email. Whatever your valve is for letting off steam make sure you use it to release the pressure a few times a day. This isn’t a suggestion to let those distractions become anything more than a momentary activity. If you are spending more than 5-10 minutes doing them you probably should get back to work.
Have Plans
Make sure you have plans for things to do on weeknights and for the upcoming weekend. Plans will give you something to look forward to. Why are you working so hard if you don’t give yourself a chance to go play too? Make sure you’re looking into summer concerts or taking in a museum exhibit once in a while. Your plans might be as simple as having taco dinner every Wednesday or watching a favorite show every week. Making plans with friends and even coworkers is equally important. Plans with coworkers can help build a social bond that will make working with them during the day more pleasant.
Eat Lunch Out Frequently
Lunch is a valuable break in the day. It splits the day into two smaller and more manageable parts. If you’re the type of person that eats lunch at your desk or in the café everyday you should ask yourself if you’d be happy to get out once in awhile. Go out to lunch with coworkers. Pick a place that is close so you can enjoy your time at lunch without being rushed.
These are just a few of the ways you can improve your happiness in the work place. The important thing is that you find out what makes you happy and sustain that each and every day.
