The startling fact of the matter is that while it is true that the indoor environment is almost as polluted as the outdoor environment, if not more. When it comes to air quality, these impossible-to-see pollutants can be pretty harmful, and our behaviour may just be making things worse. There are of course the most common types of allergens like dust, pollen, and dander that you might be facing, but there are a lot of other things we do that can affect the quality of indoor air quite significantly.rnFor almost all of us, our homes are sanctuaries where we head to after a long day to unwind within familiar confines. However, it is also true that things are not always as perfect as they might initially seem. Even being indoors poses a set of risks, as even the candles, gas stoves and our petsare part of the countless hazards because of which indoor air pollution is becoming a major concern for health. In an unfathomed turn of events, the things we do in order to make our homes seem more hospitable can actually lead to several issues like asthma, allergic reactions, and other respiratory issues. The Challenge One of the biggest challenges in being able to detect such threats is the fact that most indoor air pollutants that affect your health are odourless, colourless, and invisible to the naked eye.People don’t have an idea about the things that they inhale everyday, and fact still remains that once you have inhaled those small pollutants, it’s quite hard to get them out of the body again. Home Pollutants and Your Indoor Behaviour There are pollutants that we all know about and can’t really do much about, like dust, pollen, pet dander, etc. However, there are several other types of pollutants that we need to contend with. There are chemical by-products of combustion, volatile organic compounds that may be coming from the ‘brand new’ smell of furniture, asbestos and lead that may have become air borne during construction, biological allergens like mould spores, mites, etc., and many more. Symptoms resulting from indoor air pollution may range from chronic coldand dizziness to rashes and breathing issues. Some of the more serious issues can include asthma, pneumonia, and in extreme cases, even cancer.rnFor indoor air, maintaining quality is a responsibility that rests on the resident. You need to know what increasesthe concentrations of whatpollutant and mould your activities or take precautionary measures accordingly. Creating a Healthier Home This begins with you challenging conventional beliefs. You may think that lighting essential oils or having a lot of plants might be helpful, but that is not necessarily true. These products too may release organic chemicals into the indoor air. Opening a window or running the air conditioningmight seem like the right idea, but it may play a part in increasing your problem as you just move around the polluted air without eliminating it. Other things that you can do aremaking some behaviouralchanges.Turn on the exhaust when you cook, avoid smoking indoors, don’t light a fire indoors, etc. One of the most beneficialideas in this regard is installing a good air purifierin your home, based on the problems you face. Making lifestyle changes and equipping your home with the right appliances like air purifiers and even vacuum cleaners should be done in tandem,as that will help make a big difference towards a healthier ambience at home.At the same time, it is very important that you pay attention to how the indoor air quality in your home makes you feel, so that you can take pre-emptive measuresaccordingly.
