Industrial waste, its impacts and management

Today, with the progress in each and every sector of the economy by the humans, industrial sector is growing at a rapid pace. With such progress being made in the industry, no matter to which product or service it is related, the amount of industrial waste being produced is also increasing. Industrial waste is the waste which is produced ultimately by the industrial houses as a result of performing their industrial activity and this industrial waste usually includes the materials which become useless during the manufacturing process. These industrial houses may be the factories, mills or indulged in mining operations. Major types of the industrial waste which is produced by these industrial houses are usually in the form of metals, solvents, oils, scrap lumber, chemicals, dirt & gravel, sometimes even the vegetable matters from the restaurants. Such industrial waste material may be in the form of solid, liquid or gas. Industrial waste materials are most of the times hazardous material which may be ignitable, reactive, corrosive, toxic or radio-active. It is impacting the environment by contaminating it and thus in turn by impacting the human life in the society. This has forced us to adopt the technologies like industrial waste incinerator. Industrial waste is usually of different types such as chemical waste, toxic waste, municipal solid waste and industrial solid waste. These can also be classified as solid industrial waste and liquid industrial waste. Effects of the industrial waste Industrial waste material has many bad impacts on the environment itself and on the people living in the society. Some of such impacts are discussed below: • Untreated and partially treated wastewater is fed back by the factories and power plants located near such bodies of water and make them polluted. This contaminated water in turn affects the water life and also impacts the health of people residing near such water sources. • Fossil fuel burning in the industrial houses results in the air pollution. Harmful toxins released from the burning of such fuel pollute the air and makes it unhealthy for the humans to breathe in. • Most of the industries use plastic in one way or the other in their manufacturing process or in their final product. This plastic is ultimately disposed of through landfilling which contaminates the land and makes it inappropriate for use. • Whenever a single species of animals is affected by industrial waste, then it disturbs the whole ecosystem of the environment. This results in huge environmental adverse impacts. • As the industrial waste contaminates the water and land resources, it affects the vegetation of the city or region. It will cause deforestation, which in turn will increase the global warming on the planet. There are many other adverse impacts which are caused by the industrial waste on the environment. No doubt, the short-term effects are visible, but their long-term effects are dangerous too. Management of Industrial waste The above discussed effects of the industrial waste make it necessary to focus more on the management of such waste. There are many rules and regulations which have been enacted by the governments in order to control the industrial waste, but that is not enough. Though, there are some modern techniques of industrial waste management, which makes the disposal much easier and reduces the impacts of that many times.
