There are quite a few fairly large reasons massage therapists and bodyworkers may want to sign up for massage therapy liability insurance. In fact, depending on you particular situation, securing massage therapy liability insurance may not even be an option—it may be a requirement based on where you work. For example, if you are an employee at a site such as a spa, a chiropractor’s office, a medical clinic, or a massage therapy and bodywork franchise club, there is a good chance you are actually required to have your own massage therapy liability insurance. In addition, some states and regions that regulate the field of massage therapy and bodywork also require practitioners to possess massage therapy liability insurance in order to earn and maintain a license to practice. For those massage therapists and bodyworkers who are not bound to enroll in a massage therapy liability insurance program, take a minute to think about why so many employers and also various regulating boards do require practitioners to have such a policy in place for professional practice. Obviously, there are solid reasons behind such a requirement, and they are the same reasons you would be wise to consider securing your own massage therapy liability insurance as well. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons to get massage therapy liability insurance—and maybe the one that is the easiest to understand—is the fact that accidents happen. Even though accidents may be rare, their unpredictable and often destructive nature are the foundation for the insurance industry as a whole. Much like automobile insurance, massage therapy liability insurance is there to protect you in case of an accident or other unexpected occurrence. For example, the general liability portion of massage therapy liability insurance will cover you in case a client has an accident on your property. Whether it is a trip on your uneven sidewalk that results in a sprained ankle or a slip on a wet patch in the bathroom of your practice that causes a fracture to the wrist, you never know what kind of accident might occur on your property in the course of a career. If a client who sustains an injury on your property decides to file a claim against you for the damages, then you will be mighty relieved to have a solid massage therapy liability insurance policy in place to protect you and your assets. Other unexpected occurrences that necessitate massage therapy liability insurance include clients who might claim damage or injury due to a lack of skill or competence on your part as the practitioner or as the result of a product you used on them during the session. In the first scenario, the malpractice liability portion of your massage therapy liability insurance should provide the proper coverage. In the second situation, it is the product liability component that will be called on for coverage. Of course, there are other wonderful benefits that come with the right massage therapy liability insurance policy, including rental damage coverage, reimbursement for lost or stolen work equipment and even identity theft protection insurance. For so many reasons, obtaining massage insurance is a good idea for the professional practitioner of massage therapy or bodywork. Fortunately, this good idea does not cost much more than around $160 per year.
