Why have orchids captured the hearts and minds of so many flower lovers worldwide? Here's some very interesting information about orchids that'll help us understand their alluring nature: Orchids Are Beautiful First, and foremost, orchids are naturally beautiful. I don't think you'll find anyone that will dispute this. They capture the attention of men and women alike all around the world. Over the years they have become symbolic of not only beauty, but also of power, love and opulence. Some species have even been named after celebrities and famous historical figures such as United States presidents. Orchids are easy to recognize; they typically have three petals; two similar and the other resembling a lip. Their color is vibrant. They include red, blue, yellow and white. Orchids Are Resilient One of the main attractions of the orchid is its ease of care. Except for the driest deserts and Antarctica, they can be found in literally all parts of the world. Orchids can survive in a number of different habitats. Some enjoy full exposure to the sun while others thrive in the shade. Some live in trees while others prefer the ground or even rocks. Variety Because of their wide variety, there is so much to learn about them if you want to grow and breed different types of orchids. Worldwide, there are over 20,000 naturally occurring species of orchids and hundreds of thousands of breeds. The most common types of orchids are Cattleya (also known as the Corsage Orchid), Phalaenopsis (also known as the Moth Orchid), Paphiopedilums (also known as Lady Slippers), Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Oncidiums (also known as Dancing Slippers) and Vanda. Orchids Can Be Expensive The most expensive orchid ever sold fetched an amazing US$202,000! Fortunately, you and I will never need to pay that much for an orchid. While they can cost more, on average, than most other popular house plants, there aren’t many plants that will give you beautiful blooms for many weeks of the year.
