Internet Phone VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) - Technology & Conditions

If you are just starting to look at the VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) as an alternative to traditional POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service), your home or office, you will be hit with all new technical terms and industry jargon. This is a guide to help clarify and define some basic vocabulary used in the VoIP world.

Many of these conditions is not only the VoIP world. As with so many technologies, which revolves around broadband, wireless and telephony networks, you will see elsewhere in these conditions, it will be helpful for you to understand their meaning, as they relate to VoIP.

Telephone Adapter - VoIP phone adapter for the world is a device that is installed between your network and telephone equipment. You can think of it as a converter, as it is sometimes called the term. Of these simple devices have three connections: power adapter is connected to an electrical outlet, 4-wire dial-up connection when you plug your standard telephone equipment and the Ethernet adapter to connect the device to your network. The adapter converts (digitizes) the analog phone signal to the IP protocol.

Codec - short coder / decoder, the compression and decompression utility that compresses and digitizes the analog voice signal is created by your phone. There are different codecs are used, and each one offers different levels of compression. With different levels of compression comes at different levels of quality voice over the line.

VoIP Service Provider - This is your VoIP hardware, network, and the rest of the world, the actual service provider. Some only provide computer services, while others provide complete home and office solutions, including multiple phone numbers and fax / data solutions.

RTP - Real-time Transport Protocol is a protocol used to connect to a broadband connection for voice calls over the standards. RTP is used in conjunction with RTCP (Real-time Transport Control Protocol) to provide QoS (Quality of Service). It gives priority to traffic control standard traffic over the network via a voice call. Standard traffic may be thought of as a text, e-mail or other low-priority, non-time sensitive traffic.

SIP - Session Initiation Protocol to control the VoIP traffic is transmitted and routed through the broadband network. In simple terms, a SIP session (phone call), the standard by which initiated and stopped (the handset).

VoIP phone - a phone that is designed specifically for use with VoIP service. It has both functions of the phone in its basic design, but all the phone adapter included in the adoption of a single function, built-i

Softphone - This is actually a misleading term that is definitely not the phone. A softphone is a computer equipped with a microphone, speakers (or headset) and a software program that allows you to make telephone calls, in addition to normal phone or adapter.
