There’s no question about it – as nurses, we’ve chosen one of the most challenging and exhausting professions available. Don’t get me wrong – the healthcare industry can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling… but it also comes with demanding hours, difficult patients and necessary continued education. So the last thing we need is to add yet another stressful component to an already demanding profession. However, when interviewing for an RN job – whether it’s with a facility or through an agency, I find the process to result in a loss of sleep and an increased heart-rate. Is there a simple way to sort through and prepare for the nurse interview? Anne Hafner, DON of Nurses PRN has eased some of the process by detailing expectations and preparation tips in a video blog: http://www.prnhealthservices.com/health-news.php. Allow me to walk you through her message. Basically, she states that there are three types of interviews: phone interviews, face-to-face interviews and virtual interviews. Each interview requires a slightly different approach. For example, when participating in a phone interview, it doesn’t matter how you are dressed – but you can bet the background noise or distractions makes a difference. Both you and the interviewer will be more focused if there are no background distractions… no radio, television or pets barking! As for a virtual interview – consider what the interviewer will see… be well dressed from the waist up and clear the clutter from your computer desk! As for a face-to-face interview… all rules apply! Be well groomed, be prepared and arrive early. Punctuality is something everyone appreciates and respects. Regardless of the interview venue – it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the facility, unit or organization you are interviewing with. Take some time to research the mission and vision of the company. Not only does it show your commitment, it will prepare you to speak the language of the company. Based on the floor or unit you are interviewing for – brush up on your skills for patient care in that area. Be familiar with terms that go along with the position you are seeking. The little details reflect that you are invested and eager to be part of the team. It’s also imperative to be prepared for those tough questions – what are your weaknesses? When have you made a mistake and how did you recover from that? When working with difficult people, how do you conduct yourself? You’d be surprised at how much easier an interview process is when you are prepared. Feel free to contact any of our recruiters for tips and suggestions on interviewing! 888.830.8811, Nurses PRN – we’re experts in this field and would be happy to help!
