EFT, or Emotional Freedom Technique, is a healing method or a healing tool that combines modern psychology with Chinese acupuncture. It is used to decrease, even eliminate, emotional stress and is also very successful for eliminating limited beliefs or fears that block us from moving into abundance and into the life we truly want to live. It is also used in some cases involving physical pains or discomforts.
There is still a lot of research being done around EFT, its effects and why it works. The original theory suggests that because the root of our emotions is placed in our energy system, we can use the acupuncture points to release this energy. However, this has not been verified properly by scientific research yet, mainly due to funding and the difficulty in measuring subtle energies. Newer research is showing that our emotional reactions come out of our amygdala, which is the part of the brain that processes emotional memory.
It basically works in therapy sessions as this: When we state the problem that we are facing, we are bringing the memory (or image or response or feeling) forth. Then, when we tap on these acupuncture points, we sort of stop the physiological response to the feeling, image or trauma of the client seeking help. So we are re-wiring the brain and the neuro-pathways so to speak.
With that, it becomes obvious that EFT can be used to aid most any problem. This video was created as a guide to introduce you to the most basic and simple technique of EFT and how it can be used.
The points that will be tapped in the video are the following:
- The karate chop point (this is the place below your pinky finger and above the heal of your hand)
- Between your eyebrows
- Sides of the eyes
- Below your eyes
- Below the nose
- On the chin
- On the collarbone
- Under the arms
- Top of the head
While there are plenty of other points to tap, these are the most basic ones and are used the most often.
In the most basic EFT process, we simply state the problem in order to neutralise the physiological response that we are having to the problem. However, we also want to start with a set up phrase just to tell ourselves that everything is perfectly alright.
Let’s pick anger. Just to keep it really simple, let’s work on a situation where you are angry with your best friend (for whatever reason).
Before we start, you want to ask yourself, on a scale from 1/10 how intense the feeling is right now. Then, we start with the set up phase:
So tap the karate chop point and say, “Even though I feel a lot of anger right now, I deeply and completely love and accept myself (we say that three times). Even though I am feeling SO angry right now, I deeply and completely love and accept myself. Even though I have this anger inside of me, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”
Then, we move onto one basic round of tapping:
- Eyebrow: “I feel angry”
- Side of the eye: “I am so angry right now”
- Under the eye: “I just hate my best friend”
- Under the nose: “That’s how I feel right now”
- Chin: “Angry”
- Collarbones: “She just annoys me SO much”
- Under the arms: “And I feel angry”
- Top of the head: “And it annoys me to feel angry”
Then take a deep breath in and ask yourself again, “What is the level of the intensity of the emotion right now?”
This is the basic EFT process. Please stay tuned for upcoming videos, covering longer processes and working with different issues!
