There are many different majors that require a college anatomy course. Degrees in exercise physiology, which focuses on cardiovascular fitness, requires credits in human anatomy. Many physical therapy licensing programs require multiple credits in anatomy before allowing in students, making anatomy a wise choice for freshmen interested in the medical field. Pre-med degrees, biology degrees, and human biology degrees all require at least two anatomy classes. The basic prerequisites for taking an anatomy course are passing one or two biology classes. This is simply to ensure that students have a basic grasp on biology before moving onto the more specific realm of human anatomy.
The Typical College Anatomy Class
If a student needs more credit hours, taking a college anatomy class with three to four credit hours a semester is a wise choice. Most colleges offer survey courses for introductory anatomy classes, which briefly covers a vast amount of information in the science of anatomy. These courses include such topics as cellular structure, basic body chemistry, and an overview of systems within a human body. If a student is seriously considering a major in a biological science, they may prefer to take a more in-depth course that covers the material in a more detailed form. These classes are often the first of a two semester class, and cover topics such as how the body maintains homeostasis, and the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.
Online Classes and Transferring Credits
Many college students are now opting out of traditional classrooms, and choosing to take online classes that transfer to their university or college. Flexible class hours, cheaper course fees, and better interaction with professors are all common reasons to choose taking an online course. Many universities are now offering their own online courses in anatomy, making it easier for students to find credits they can easily transfer. Online courses can also have their own virtual labs, so that students don't have to sacrifice their traditional class hours to lab hours, which can impede the student's accumulation of credit hours. This is also a more palatable option for students with weaker stomachs; virtual labs rarely have the blood and guts that are associated with dissection labs.
Keeping Up Good Grades in Anatomy
Any science course can be challenging, and anatomy is no exception. Good study habits are a must if a student wishes to make an A in the course. Setting aside specific blocks of time to study, joining a study group, or even signing up for one-on-one tutoring are all wonderful ideas to help increase the chances of a good grade. Even the smartest student needs help every once in a while, so don't be afraid to approach anatomy professors for tips on how to pass the next test. There are also many websites that offer tutoring for free, or for a small fee. Students should also be sure to complete all assigned work. Attendance is necessary in anatomy courses, as missing one day of class can put a student behind. Having a friend in class who doesn't mind sharing notes is a good way to catch up if a student cannot make it to class.
