Is COPD A Precursor To Lung Cancer?
Introduction
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, commonly known as COPD, is a serious lung condition in itself that is mostly found in smokers. This condition, which tends to get worse over time, causes chronic coughing with mucous, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. According to oncologists in Patna, COPD is major risk factor for lung cancer, to an extent that it could even be a precursor to lung cancer. This is because lung cancer and COPD share the same causes, which include cigarette smoking and premature lung aging. Although it can’t be said that every person with COPD will get lung cancer, it certainly does increase the risk a great deal. Every year, about 1% of all people suffering with COPD get lung cancer.
When to See a Doctor?
Once it is determined that you have COPD, your doctor will keep an eye out for any signs that may indicate lung cancer instinctively. You should too, pay close attention to any change in symptoms you may experience, and consult your doctor right away if you experience:
- Fatigue
- Loss of appetite
- Unexplained weight loss
- Chest pain unrelated to coughing
- Hoarseness
- Bronchitis, pneumonia, or other recurring lung infections
- Coughing up blood or mucus marked with blood
- A nagging cough, even a dry one, that will not go away
When lung cancer starts spreading in the body, it also causes severe symptoms such as:
- Headaches
- Numbness
- Dizziness
- Abdominal pain
- Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
- Bone pain
Prevention
Oncologists at a leading cancer hospital in Patna say that there are two major steps that can be taken to prevent lung cancer from developing:- If you have COPD and continue to smoke, quit immediately.
- If you work around hazardous substances, reduce your exposure by wearing protective gear, such as a face mask. Also make sure your company is following laws protecting workers from contact with carcinogenic materials.
Cancer treatment in Patna is now considered one of the top cancer treatment in India, and cancer hospitals in Patna are among the best cancer hospitals in Bihar, Jharkhand and adjacent areas.
