Is Investing Something Only The Rich Do?
Stock investing was once something that only the rich dabbled in but these days it is an activity that just about anyone with a bit of spare funds at the end of the month can do. There are not many of us who could afford to lose our money each and every month but trading on the stock market can be great if you get to see your investment grow over time.
When it comes to making an actual start on the stock market, it would be a great idea to think about the things that interest you. It is possible to invest in gold or silver and it could be imagined that a huge amount would be required to purchase these valuable commodities. But this is not the truth at all. It will only cost you a few pounds if you'd like trade in a few grams of either precious metal. Increasing the value of these metals by dealing is a good idea as the cost is quite low.
It was previously the case that you had to do your investing through a stock broker and this meant paying quite heavy fees. It was usually in the trading of stocks and shares, and for the mindful investor, the broker would always suggest buying shares in “Blue Chip” companies. These were the large companies, and the investment in them was usually safe, and twice every year, a dividend payment would be sent to the investors in those companies. The other method of investing through a broker was in “Unit Trusts” whereby many smallish investments were clubbed together to make a single larger investment.
It is now easy to buy and trade shares through an online broker. Instead of paying huge fees to the traditional stock broker who would work from a luxurious office, the fees for online brokers are considerably less. It was previously the case that clients would always follow the advice provided by the stock broker. The broker went out to visit very wealthy clients either at their offices or in the evening at the client’s home or at their club. But online brokers will charge a small fee of about £10 for every transaction.
The real idea of stock market investing was to ensure that the price paid for stocks was low while selling at a higher price. This theory sounds great but it's not always that simple. Of course there is many other methods of trading, including spread-betting and forex trading and it is really down to personal choice as to the kind of trade. You need to think about how much money you are willing to invest before you start trading. It's best to commence with a small amount that you could afford to lose and then get going.
