Has the windshield on your vehicle been damaged by a stone? Dings from stones are very common, especially if the vehicle is driven on roads which are graveled regularly or in areas that have more than their fair share of truck traffic. While so windshield damage can be classed as a cosmetic annoyance, others can obscure vision and in some cases become larger cracks. Should you replace or repair the windshield? The windshield plays an important role with regards to safety. The driver obviously needs to be able to have a clear line of vision to make sure that he or she can drive safely. Because of this different states have different regulations and laws dictating when windshields should be replaced or repaired. Insurance companies may also have specific policies with regards to coverage for windshield. This can take the shape of digital photographs being required when windshields are damaged so that the claim can be assessed and a decision made on whether the glass needs to be replaced or repaired. It is typically the case that if the critical viewing area is not the obscured by any cracks or chips larger than 3 inches in size, and so long as the drivers visibility to operate the car safely is not impaired, it will be appropriate to carry out a windshield repair rather than a windshield replacement. It may be the case that vehicle owners do not have the final say in whether their windshield is going to be replaced or repaired. At the end of the day it will be the damage itself which dictates what will happen. If the driver cannot see due to pitting, cracks or chips, or the vehicles structure has been compromised, the windshield will need to be replaced. While many drivers prefer the option which is least expensive, they should remember that taking the cheapest route can sometimes be a case of false economy. While the chip or ding may be small right now, if the safety of the vehicle, the driver or the passengers is compromised, the price may be a hefty one to pay later on down the road. When it comes to matters of safety it is always worth erring on the side of caution. It is important that vehicle owners are aware that that are specific safety standards which should be adhered to when it comes to windshield replacements. The correct type of adhesive should be used, and the glass and the vehicle should be properly primed with enough time given for the adhesive to cure properly before the vehicle is driven. Because of this it is important that a reputable, quality windshield replacement company is located, and to do this you may have to ask for recommendations from friends, family and work colleagues, as well as researching customer testimonials for local auto glass businesses.
