Last week the world paid respects to Elizabeth Taylor, and I was reminded that in death we begin to view an individual from the eyes of goodness and greatness. But why is it during life we view these same individuals from a completely different perspective? I am generalizing here, but in many cases--especially conce
ing her multiple marriages--Taylor was definitely put through the ringer when it came to judgments made against her. Did she deserve some of these? Possibly, but it's not my place to judge her actions of the past, nor is it my place to judge another in the present or the future—especially when the actions did not directly relate to me personally or my family.
Our perspective is something we all need to be able to step back and refocus. What is our perspective of certain actions and activities of others that is bothering us at this particular time?
Let’s jump into whatever business situation you are in right now. Think back to a time when another individual’s actions upset or frustrated you. What was it they were doing? Did their actions (whether it was something they said or did) directly affect you? Either immediately or after a time had passed? What was your initial reaction? Looking back at the instance and seeing it from a new direction (present looking past), do you see how you might have been able to respond differently?
What if, just maybe you were able to see there may have been a logical or good reason for this individual to do what they did? Can you see where this might be true? Put yourself in their shoes. You did the same action they had done; are you able to see any reason supporting the decision to move forward with the action where it seemed like a positive step for them and/or you?
Being able to refocus our perspective lens as we encounter situations that act like triggers for our emotional responses is critical to being able to market ourselves successfully. Responding not just for the sake of responding but because our actions can trigger reactions and repercussions which may not be in our line of sight at the time.
The next time you are experiencing an emotional response to a situation, take a few seconds to focus on your breathing and re-center your energy. Now take a few more seconds to really see the situation before you. Listen to what your inner guidance and wisdom are telling you. What is it saying? Making hasty business decision – yes, your response to any situation becomes a potential business decision that can lead to disaster later. Practice focusing on the unspoken and the minute details of the other individual with whom you are interacting. You will be surprised how responsive they will become and how much more "listened" to you will become.
Until next time, embrace your inner wisdom.
Namaste,
Karen
