Those who are interested in liposuction should be aware of who qualifies for the procedure. Surprisingly, it’s not for everyone. One of the most important factors that determine if a person is a good candidate for the surgery is lifestyle. Not all people are able or willing to live a healthy lifestyle after having the surgery. Recipients who do not maintain a healthy lifestyle after the surgery may gain weight in unsightly places and be unhappy with the ultimate result.
Being a good candidate in the first place reduces the likelihood of unsightly complications in the future. So how do you know if you’re a good candidate for liposuction in the first place?
A basic way to know if you’re a good candidate is to take a look at your health. If you’re at peak health, you’re probably a good candidate. If you have serious health problems, you’re probably not.
Why? There are a lot of reasons. The first is that people must be able to heal and many conditions slow or prevent proper healing.
A person who is in peak health will be able to bounce back, so to speak, after surgery and will be less likely to react badly to having fat removed from the body.
Losing a lot of fat at one time is traumatic to the body as well as simply losing a lot of fluids. A body that is healthy is less likely to react adversely to this process.
It may be surprising that good health is necessary for liposuction to be successful, especially because conventional wisdom suggests that thinner is always healthier. It would seem, then, that health would naturally increase after the surgery and would not be strictly necessary before.
The truth is that the best candidates for liposuction are already at a healthy weight and are getting the surgery for purely cosmetic reasons. Ethical surgeons will not be willing to do the surgery at all on a person who is overweight.
It’s important to have good healthy habits in place before going into surgery so that those habits of balanced eating and regular physical activity can be maintained.
A person who has had liposuction can gain weight again even though some of the fat cells have been removed. The remaining fat cells can enlarge and sometimes the result is unsightly.
People have been known to put on weight in unusual places, such as the calves or back. Others have their skin take on a bumpy or textured look that they find embarrassing.
It is essential for a person who has had liposuction to eat right and exercise regularly to avoid these unfortunate results. Having established habits ahead of time is a good idea before even considering getting the surgery.
