Krishna is perceived to an avatar of Vishnu by most Hindus. The avatar of Vishnu is regarded as the highest one and it is believed that all other deities are manifestation or forms of him. Krishna is considered to be an ideal, a warrior, hero, teacher and philosopher by many devotees. His birthday is celebrated as a notable festival. The celebrations continue for two days and people forgo their sleep to sing traditional songs for the welcome of Lord Krishna. Dances and songs are something which Krishna like the most therefore these gestures are used to venerate and remember the supreme God. Children also prepare plays re-enacting scenes from Krishna’s early life.
The occasion is believed to be very auspicious. Many news channels cover the entire program live in Mathura and show it across India. People, who are unable to visit the town in person, experience the divinity of the festival through news channels. On the preceding day of the festival devotees keep a vigil and fast until midnight, the fixed time of his arrival or birth. At midnight the image of Krishna can be seen which is then bathed in holy water and milk, dressed in exquisite laddu gopal dresses, placed in decorated cradle and enthusiastically worshipped.
The entire town is decorated and dyed with colourful lights, balloons and flowers. The temples are full of devotees dancing and singing.
