Studying and exploring all the aspects of both ancient as well as modern languages, a linguist will take care of various aspects of such languages. It means they will look for sounds, origins, and other aspects of language concerned.

Job Descriptions

According to the definition offered by the Cambridge encyclopedia volumes, the job of linguist includes –

Studying the words, meanings, sounds, and other aspects of the language.
The language under study could be for a modern or an ancient language.
Linguists will use scientific techniques to study on various aspects of the language in questions.
Types of Linguists

Various types of linguists are there. Major among them are -

Lexicographers are one of the linguist classes that take care of compiling the definitions in form of a dictionary like the Cambridge encyclopedia volumes.
Etymologists are the linguists that study the origin as well as evolution of the words.
Linguist anthropologists study relations between written and spoken languages and they will also group the users of such languages. Usually they will differentiate between languages with rural and urban origins.

Linguists will work with the languages in multiple ways. Some of them may also be involved in development of artificial languages like the Esperanto. This is a language that is used all over Europe and has a combination of most of the widely used words in major European languages.

Linguists have job prospects in –

Public sector in Culture department, especially in the archives where various experiments and studies are carried out on different languages, their origins, structures, and formations.
Private companies where linguists may work in tandem with the computer scientists to create computer languages that would be more in line with the traditional languages.
Linguists also have good scope for jobs where sign languages are developed.
Jobs are available in libraries and scientific research institutes as well.
They work for universities, high tech companies, consulting firms, military, and government.
Education and Training

While the education and training requirements may vary depending on the job entrusted to the linguist, a bachelor’s degree is necessary at entry level while the masters or doctoral degrees in education or some particular language would be required for higher level jobs.

Average median salary in the job of linguist stood at around $70,000 as per the Bureau of Statistics for Labors in United States.
