Every day, we face obstacles that challenge us in our personal growth and test our resolve for going after what we want in life. Overcoming these obstacles seems to require super human powers that us normal humans just don't possess. But you can increase your internal strength by expressing your emotions through the written world in a daily journal.
Here are 5 ways you can put jou
aling to use for conquering all of your personal obstacles:
1. Clear Your Mind
When obstacles come your way, it's easy to get trapped in a negative cycle of thoughts that continue on even when you try to get some sleep. But the solution to overcoming your obstacle won't come to you when you're stuck in that cycle. To interrupt the cycle and clear your mind of repetitive and unhelpful thoughts, pull out your journal and just let all those thoughts get onto paper.
When they jump from your mind to your journal, your negative thoughts have less control over you.
2. Set Your Intention
When you feel your resolve to continue with a goal being tested, it's time to write down exactly what you want and become more connected with it. If you're experiencing any obstacles at the moment, sit down and write out what your main intention or desire is for this situation. Get very clear so you can focus on filtering out what is actually important versus what is just an unnecessary obstacle.
3. Create SMART Goals
SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based. It’s a straightforward system, once you get the hang of it. When you reach an obstacle, write down your goal again and compare it to the SMART formula. If it does not meet all the criteria, you should use your journal to help you reevaluate your goal. Making these SMART goals helps you to increase your resolve against current and future obstacles.
4. Hold Yourself Accountable
You should remind yourself of your goals and intentions each day. If you start to experience more negative thoughts arising, continue to let them have their voice in your journal and set them free from your mind. Keep this routine going as you get closer and closer to reaching your goals.
5. Celebrate Your Victories
Every step you get closer to achieving a goal requires some celebration. While some people might have given up at the first sign of struggle, your continuing on is a sign that you're growing as a person in exciting ways. While others may not appreciate your small victories, your journal will be your best friend and will celebrate with you as much as you let it. Don't skip this step as you'll want to have thee victories written down when you come across your next big obstacle.
