Everyone has perceived a lack of motivation at one time or another. You can move past this false perception more quickly than you think.
While it might seem like motivation is allusive, fickle or comes and goes, motivation is imbued in your psyche before you are born. It is the indoctrination, conditioning, disappointments and perceived failures that prompt you to perceive motivation is something to acquire.
Proof that motivation is imbued in one’s psyche is demonstrated immediately at birth. Infants cry to gets one’s needs met is the first evidence. Then followed close behind through trial and error achievements, such as crawling, walking, and running one’s natural motivation is well-established.
Remember you are an authority in your area of expertise. Here are three easy to use strategies to rekindle your motivation.
1. Disconnect: Are you perpetually connected to devices throughout the day, searching for that shot of dopamine that is released when you receive a text, message, or notification? Your constant connection shifts your brain into reaction mode. It is a well-known phenomenon that great ideas occur when one is in the shower or other routine activities.
Setting a schedule to check and respond to email, social media, and other notifications are recommended. Honestly, the world won’t end if you don’t share a post or respond to a text message within 2 seconds. Your goals and needs are the most important. Honor yourself by scheduling the time to respond that works best for you.
2. Ask Quality Questions: Many people put their ‘problem’ on a pedestal instead of viewing it as an opportunity to find a creative and effective solution. Instead of going into ‘panic’ or ‘why me mode,’ ask quality questions. The quality of your questions is directly related to the quality of your outcome. For example, if someone says, “We have a communication problem.” Ask yourself, “When have I overcome communication challenges for myself and/or with others?” Ask the person, “How can we sharpen communication and have fun doing it?” or “What do you experience as a communication issue between us? “What are your ideas about changing our communication to be more effective?”
3. Live by and Honor Deadlines: Being a person of your word is one thing you have control over. Yes, things occur that prevent you from keeping a deadline. However, as soon as you realize you cannot keep the deadline, you can notify the person you made the commitment to and renegotiate a new deadline. One great tip I learned is setting 20-minute work periods, then, take a 3-minute break—walk around, get a drink of water, gaze out the window, go to the restroom, or close your eyes and clear out all thoughts—i.e. a mini-meditation. This practice gives your brain time to regroup and you will feel rejuvenated.
The best way to predict your future is to have two, three and five-year goals and to create it. What is the one thing–or things–that helps you jump-start your motivation? Or if using things to motivate yourself is new, you have three strategies.
Here is to your best motivated day minute to minute all ways always.
