Harmful bacteria can be found anywhere. One of the most common ways to pick up germs is from doors and door handles. Germs on doors can be very harmful to your health and the health of your family. By doing a few simple things you can help prevent illness causing bacteria and other types of germs from entering your house.
One of the most important things you can do is wash your hands. You can’t always depend on others to be washing their hands, so it is important that you wash your hands to keep others germs from infecting you. If someone in your household becomes ill, you should wash your hands even more often than usual; this can help keep not only yourself healthy, but anyone outside of your home that you might come in contact with, like at work or school, from being infected.
Most people are in and out of doors all day, every day. Doors are one thing a lot of people have in common that they touch, especially if the door is in a public place. For example in a high school, hundreds of students are in and out of doors on an hourly basis, transferring their bacteria to a high number of other students touching the same door after them. Some germs on doors will have no effect on the student who came in contact with those germs. However, some students can become ill from the same contact with the germs. Influenza and the common cold are two of the most common illnesses transferred by doors and door handles. However, influenza and the common cold are not the only types of bacteria that can be found on doors, other germs on doors can cause more serious illness, such as hepatitis A, and meningitis. Teaching your student of any age to wash or sanitize their hands often while they are at school and right when they get home from school, can make a difference in spreading germs and becoming ill.
Germs on doors at restaurant’s can be very harmful as well, like with all public restrooms, not everyone washes their hands. You might benefit from washing your hands after using the bathroom and then again after you touch the bathroom door on your way out, this will help you prevent your hands from becoming infected again right before you eat and come in close contact with your mouth, nose and eyes.
