New born babies rely heavily on the thymus to keep their immune system healthy while adults can survive without it. They can also survive without a spleen. However, they become more susceptible to illness. The spleen destroys old red blood cells and filters blood through the body. Like blood vessels, the lymphatic system flows through the entire body.
